Every day I hope on an exercise bike for about an hour or so. It usually says I burn somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 calories. I am wondering how close to this number I actually might be hitting. Are these bikes often off by a small amount like 100-200 calories.....or are they frequently off by 100s of calories?

Answer
totally inaccurate, they are a rough estimate based on a certain gender of a certain height and weight of a certain age all of which probably dont apply to you unless you are mr or mrs average, i take absolutely no notice of them at all, i would say that on average someone would be burning off approx 600-1000 calories per hour but you would have to be really putting some effort in to get anywhere near that amount of calories burnt.

What are the benefits of using an exercise bike?

xx_xx

If i use an exercise bike for 45 minutes a day, what benefits will i see. I just want to slim down my legs and tone them up. I don't want to bulk my legs up even more. So, what benefits will i see if i use one?

Answer
It depends.

but if your diet sucks or is not well designed, you won't see much fat loss. Especially if you have a lot to lose.

Oh wait, you said you just want to slim down your legs. Then do HIIT training on the bike.

It goes like this:

5 min warm up at 100-120 bpm heart rate
45 sec 120 bpm + 15 sec as fast as you possibly can
repeat 14 more times
5 min cool down at 100-120 bpm heart rate

DONE.

Do this 3x per week. The other days you can do regular 120-130 bpm riding on the bike for 45 mins.

I have a pretty good exercise bike (Life Cycle 9500HR)
I ride for 30 minutes and it seems it always reads out 10.80 miles. I started out on level 2, keeping the RPMs at 100-105= 10.80 miles. I recently have changed to the first 2 minutes warming up and keeping the RPMs at 75-85 and the last 2 minutes the same for a cool down, while minutes 3-28 are at 100-115 RPms. and still it shows 10.80 miles. How accurate do you think this is? Is there a simple way to know for sure how far I rode?

Answer
Milage counters are terrible so are the calorie counters.

Best way to use an exercise bike

Step one
take out the battery Most home machines are about as accurate as a watch (yours seems to be tuned for 21.6 miles per hour.)

Step two
start riding at around 100 rpm + or -

Step three
increase loading until you reach a point where you are just beginning to breath heavy (pant). This should be close to your aerobic threshold. Approximately 75% of your maximum heart rate. the formula 220 - age x .75 (if you have a heart rate monitor.) This is also around 75% of vo2 max

This places you in the best zone to burn fat and exercise your heart. The longer you stay at this pace the better. Higher rates will burn more calories but your heart works at higher pressure and lower volumes. Good cardio exercise increases the volume of blood your heart can pump.

If you want to judge equivalent distance jump on a real bike and ride at the same rate.( It is the only accurate way)

A better measure of fitness is your resting heart rate. Take your pulse first thing in the morning (after a good nights sleep) before you get up. Any thing below 60 is good the lower the better. Good cardio exercise will reduce resting heart rate.

As your fitness improves you will need to increase your resistance to maintain the same heart rate.
You will find that when riding the real bike, your speed will increase at this same heart rate.

How long should I ride the exercise bike to induce labor?

marine wif

I am 2 cm dilated and 70% effaced. The babys in the -2 position. I am riding the exercise bike to help induce labor. When I am riding it it feels like a lot of pressure in my pelvic area and also in my butt. How long should I ride it for it to be effective? IS the pressure a good thing?
After research I found that the exercise bike does the same thing as walking. If I could walk I would but it is too hot outside for me to do so

Answer
Taking a gentle walk or slowly pedaling a stationary bike might start contractions. Being upright puts pressure on the cervix, which may prompt it to dilate. Make sure to drink lots of fluids, maintain your body temperature below 100.5 degrees and listen to your body. If your body is tired or telling you stopâlisten to it!
