What will an exercise bike do for my body?

best exercise bike for men image

CJ2000

I'm 15, Male... I hope to get an exercise bike in a couple of weeks... But I was wondering what exactly will it do for me?
Will it build muscles? And in which areas?
Will it burn fat? And in which areas?
Is it effective?

It would be helpful if I could get some good answers =)

Answer
Exercising for 45-90 minutes a day on your exercise bike, while counting calories and avoiding nutrient-poor foods will do the following:

1) Give you more energy. Daily exercise increases your metabolism, gives you more energy and makes you feel less tired throughout the day.

2) Cycling will build muscles in your legs, though it's not a complete leg workout because the motion is not weight bearing and it only works some of the muscles. You will not end up with gigantic thighs and shins no matter how much biking you do.

3) Your cardiovascular capacity (lungs, heart) will improve. This will translate directly into being able to run or engage in other sports better.

4) Your sex drive may be effected. Some men find that exercise, while not effecting their performance in the bedroom negatively, reduces their overall sex drive in a positive way.

5) It will burn fat, especially if you count calories at the same time. In order to lose fat you must burn more calories than you consume. Fat loss occurs over the entire body - there is no such things as targeted fat loss, that is a myth that has been disproved.

In my opinion, cycling is the most accessible and effective way to lose weight. You burn can burn more calories than running (per minute) and the risk of joint damage is greatly reduced. At 5 mph you may burn 9 calories per minute running versus 15 mph biking and burning 12 calories per minute (may vary depending on your weight, fitness level).

Riding out doors is better than riding a stationary bike. If you find yourself getting bored then get an audio player and listen to an audio book, podcast or some music.

How do you deal with the terror and fear when your child is injured?

fantamusue

My 6 year old caught her foot in my exercise bike while playing on it. A knot as big as an egg appeared, all blue/black. Her first real injury of her life. I kept my cool and was calm but man I was shaking with worry. What an awful feeling seeing your child hurt. The worst thing I have ever felt in my life was the death of my friends 7 year old, my kids best friend. It was from sudden swelling of the brain, a seizure. She didn't suffer. Knowing how my heart hurt, I can't imagine her mothers' pain. How do you cope with things like this?

Answer
YOU JUST HAVE TO REMEMBER THIS ISN'T THE WORST OF WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE YEARS TO COME. I HAVE 3. MY KIDS HAVE HAD CUTS BRUISES TEETH KNOCKED OUT IN SPORTS AND MY OLDEST IS ONLY 7 THEN MY SON WILL TURN 4 THIS WEEK AND MY YOUNGEST IS JUST 2. ACCIDENTS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME YOU SHOULD ALWAYS REMEMBER ONE THING AS LONG AS THEY ARE OK A LITTLE PAIN AND BRUISING WILL GO AWAY IN TIME. MY HARDEST THING HASN'T BEEN PHYSICAL IT'S THE EMOTIONAL MY 7 YR OLD HAD A KNIFE PULLED ON HER AT SCHOOL. AND THEY SUSPENEDED THE BOYS YES MORE THAN 1 WITH A KNIFE SHE WENT BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER SPRING BREAK HER TEACHER HAD THE NERVE TO SET THE BOYS NEXT TO HER IN CLASS. SHE IS AFRAID TO EAT ANYTHING WITH A KNIFE BECAUSE IT SENDS HER BACK TO THAT DAY. PHYSICAL UNJURIES WILL HEAL JUST COMFORT THEM AND ALWAYS REMEMBER IT COULD BE WORSE.

A good pair of walking shoes. I recommends New Balance. Get out and exercise (walk, jog, rollerblade, bike, etc!)
in the fresh air. You'll be more apt to stick with it if you're not getting bored with the same machine/view every day.

How should i train for hockey with these options?

Canada44

Well first off I'm 14, I'm 5'6" and 126lbs and I want to train for hockey for the 2007-08 season. In 2006-07 I played Minor Bantam AA (In CANADA), I really want to make AAA this year. I have a 8lbs medicine ball, one of those big balls, 10lbs weight, two 4lbs weights, a stationary bike, and I have a membership at the YMCA (a gym). I'm just wondering what i should do to train for hockey. I've heard weight training stunts your growth I don't want my growth to be stunted. I also play lacrosse. I have a hockey net, pucks and a stick obviously and a fake ice board. How should I train with all of this stuff?

Answer
There're many hockey-specific training books if you don't have a coach or have access to a coach during the off-season. But it'll be good to have a partner to keep things loose, fun, and your motivation level consistent.

Out of all those equipment you listed: I'd stick to stationary bike, lacrosse, gym membership, and your listed hockey equipment.
I would NOT recommend weight training unless you can lift with proper technique, were a little older, and supervision (so you don't get hurt). Instead, concentrate on calisthenics, e.g. push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and most anything within your own body weight. That's the anaerobic exercises, I'd suggest. For aerobic, I'd suggest the bike, lacrosse, and running. Inline skates make excellent off-ice training equipment.

Alternate training days between aerobic and anaerobic, but also leave room for rest/recovery/fun. That's how I see lacrosse and other sports... they keep fit, but also don't make you get burnt out on hockey training/playing year round. Lacrosse is also great for improving hand-eye coordination skills and developing "soft hands" , i.e. when receiving passes.

For off-ice hockey shooting, I'd suggest working on honing each type of shot. Think quality first, and then quantity. Proper technique. Once you got that going, try recreating game situations. Think speed. Practice quick rebounds near the goal with your fake board like you're rebounding around the crease, different angles, proper foot, off foot, etc.

Big balls?? If you're referring to those inflatable gym balls, more power to you. Find someone to help you concentrate and focus on building up your core. Often referred to as core training.

Hockey specific things you may want to focus on whether you have someone to work with you and watch your technique: power skating and plyometrics. I'd imagine you're only 14 and you may still have some ways of growth, but when you step onto the ice, you may be going up against bigger boys. Focus on what you have to your advantage...lower center of gravity and work on things you can control. Skate strength, speed, and agility. That's where power skating, agility training, and plyometrics come into play on improving yourself.

Also do not forget to work on your stickhandling. Check out books, online, speak with coaches, older boys, etc.

I realize your desire to advance to the next tier, but do not forget to enjoy yourself with whatever you're doing. Keeping things fun and loose is part of maintaining your motivation on a consistent level. It's okay that you want to mix hard training above with some "good goofing" around, pickup games with others. Studies have shown that young players do benefit from having fun and being creative with the puck. Experiment. Give yourself permission to try new things, new playes, dekes, etc. to keep things going.

I know it's a bit much to read and follow, but you're asking a lot and there's simply no way I can go into the details. Really, I only scratched the surface here. Main thing is to make the most of your time, remain injury free, and have FUN! Good luck.

Thinking about buying a recumbent exercise bike. I was introduced to this type of exercise equipment through my local gym....think that I could keep up with a regular exercise regimen. Ladies particularly....what benefits have you achieved with this type of bike? How many pounds lost? Does this bike help the "saggy butt" issue? Thanks!

Answer
This is an excellent source of excercise. I have used it for 2 years now, especially good in the winter when its to cold to get out and walk. I am up to 10 miles at a time, and mine has handle bars that I use for propping up my arms to read. It passes the time, and the better the book, the longer i tend to go.
I have lost 68 pounds using the bike as my main source of cardio. It keeps track of how many miles, how many calories burned and what rate you are peddaling. AND YES, it tightens your saggy behind for sure! My husband could tell a big difference in a month!
Along with the bike, I use hand weights at home 3 days a week and the days I am not riding my bike (while its pretty still) I get out and walk a mile or two with my dogs.
You have to eat right too though, cutting out bad carbs, eating lean and no junk food is the way to go. Also if I could stress anything the most it would be the 8 oz 8 glasses of water a day, its been a great help.
By the way mine was 99 dollars at walmart, its a stamina 4655

Has anyone bought a recumbent bike from Walmart (the one for around $110)?

Leena

How has it worked out for you?

Answer
I know this goes beyond the scope of your question but I think it is important that you are informed.

As a general rule, when the machines you see at WalMart are designed it is assumed that you will buy it, use it once or twice, then store it in the basement or garage never to see the light of day again. You'll also see these lower priced machines in other places to satisfy the person who wants to do "something" to exercise and not spend too much money.

Buying a bike- any bike, including exercise bikes- from WalMart is a bad idea.

Recumbents are very complex machines and as a result they tend to be verrry picky about how they are made on the inside- where nobody pays any attention. They also tend to have less-than-optimum components

When selling exercise machines I relay these rules of thumb to my customers:

1) If the product costs less than $500, expect it to last approximately 100 hours.. that is 1/2 hour a day, 5 days a week for 1 year. Most of these units have a 90 day warranty. In order to use the warranty you need to contact the manufacturer (not the dealer) and fix it yourself with new parts supplied... many retailers (including WalMart to my knowledge) will not accept returns on items like this;
2) if it costs between $500 and $1000, expect it to last approximately 500 hours... 1 hour a day, 5 days a week for 2 years. Usually includes an in-home warranty of up to a year and occasionally has some dealer support;
2) If it costs over $1000 chances are there is an extended warranty and the machine is made for long term use, perhaps 5 years or more. This usually includes in home service at no extra charge. In the time you wear this machine out it is likely that a $500 machine would be replaced at least 3 times.

So, what do I suggest? Save your money, buy a nice sweatsuit and a good heart rate monitor, then go walking outside. If you have a munchkin or 2 to watch, buy a jogging stroller. Walk or jog 30 minutes a day outside.

If you choose to go ahead and get the recumbent, thats cool. Just print this answer out, fold it up, and tape it to the machine in an inconspicuous place. Once you start having problems and need to fix it, read this answer again.

best exercise bikes under 500 image

orwellian9

I don't really have the money to replace my bike, but I will be using it every day soon and I want to have something road worthy.

I may start looking for used, but I need help deciding what to look for:

I like (need) a comfort saddle (like the kind you find on Specialized Comfort bikes).

I like to lean forward a bit (not ride in upright position).

I ride in the city, on pavement that is smooth (but for they occasional crack or bump).

Sometimes I ride hard and I desire performance; I use my bike for exercise and less often transportation (though that may be changing).

I enjoy my current ride: a cheap Specialized hybrid (comfort/mountain), but it's kind of boring, not enough balls I might say.

Specific models would be great (but keep the MSRP under $500).

Answer
"...not enough balls, I might say."

Then you are looking for a road bike. If your tendency to lean forward over the bars is pronounced enough, then you will find the 'drop' racing-type handlebars should suit your riding better than the more upright "hybrid" style, which are in essence, much like those for touring and commuting.

Be sure to determine what your correct frame size is, for a road bike. There is no substitute for going to a bicycle shop and having some hands-on help for this. If you are in the process of shopping around, you can ask for this sort of assistance without the obligation to buy. Be sure to engage them fully and give them a chance to show you their bikes. They deserve your attention even if you are sure that you are not quite yet ready to buy. You will learn from all of this, so don't shortchange yourself here.

Your budget may require looking for a deal on a quality used road bike, as $500 is usually slightly below a good new entry-level model, and the parts from your current bicycle cannot simply be switched over onto a new or used road frame. However, there are several models of new bicycles available at this level.

Also, ride quality is a consideration. Aluminum frames are lighter, but undeniably a bit harsher and less forgiving of road shock. If you are not serious about racing, you may find that a good steel-framed bicycle suits you better. After all, even for exercise, discomfort will affect motivation and make your riding less enjoyable.

You did not mention whether you prefer to keep your current bicycle. If you can sell your current bike and add the proceeds to your budget, then at $600 to $650, some decent road bicycle models become feasible. Also, in one month, many dealers will start looking to clear out inventory as the peak summer season ends. Don't overlook this: you can save $75 to $125, if you buy at the right time.

That said, for a basic road bicycle with a good ride and a price that can't be beat from a good manufacturer, try the Jamis Ventura Sport, which at 2007 MSRP $525 ('street', $470+), is the lowest price for a decent road bicycle that isn't "no-name". When buying a bicycle, keep in mind that while you can upgrade the components over time, replacing a frame usually means replacing a bike. So your wisest purchase is for a better frame with lesser components, as opposed to the other way around.

There are 'overstock' discounted prices a bit cheaper that can be dug up on deals which you can find on the 'Net for 'off-brand' bikes, but not where you can go into a shop and test ride one.

Spending a bit more does get you more. You should at least try test-riding a steel bike to feel how it rides. One bicycle that has received glowing reviews for ride quality is the Jamis Satellite (MSRP $775, 'street' price $680). Bianchi's Brava is worth mentioning here, with a steel frame and MSRP of $799.99 (sorry, it's those exchange rates pushing this one up a bit, 'street' price will be less).

In aluminum-framed bicycles, examples of good models to look for include the Jamis Ventura Comp (2007 MSRP $700, 'street' $620), and the Specialized Allez (2007 MSRP $770, 'street' $670) -- the basic, not the "Elite" or "Sport"; a good deal will bring this one down into your price range. Trek's entry in this range is the 1000, an "Alpha" model (2007 MSRP $710, 'street' $630).

A good bicycle purchase will remind you of how good or bad it is, every ride, for years. The time and effort expended here is well worth it.

If i burn 1000 calories at the gym, how many calories should i eat when i get home?

Eric

Ok so I don't know much about loosing weight other then just working out and burning calories and fat. I just had a doctors appointment today and they said i need to loose 10-15 pounds. Im really dedicated this because they mentioned high blood pressure and could be at risk of type 2 diabetes. Im 5'8 222, but i really don't look that much. I have a football kind of body in a way. Im just a bigger built person but that is no excuse. I go to LA fitness and i usually ride the exercise bike for 16 miles= 500 calories, i want to step it up to 1000 calories which i know i can do so dont says its impossible for me. If I'm burning 1000 calories, how many should i eat once i get home from the gym? Im assuming not more then i burned at the gym. Also if im burning 1000+ calories is that all i could do at the gym? is that enough? or could i do even more like some weight training? To let you all know, i really would like a straight forward kinda answer, not a 3 paragraph answer on what i need to do. Also is that safe to burn 1000 calories a day? let me know, thanks.

Answer
Straight forward answer? Yes it is perfectly safe to burn 1000 calories a day. Just note that 90% or more of your results will come from diet, so learn how to eat right. If you want guarenteed results, figure out your calorie maintenance and aim for that amount everyday. Since you are burning 1000 calories a day, that will put you under the state of calorie deficiency, which is the ONLY way the human body loses weight. Hope this helped man, just remember to stay CONSISTENT with your diet and exercise. Goodluck!

upright bike vs. treadmill?

Paige

i am sixteen years old and i need to get into shape. i'm not trying to lose weight. but definitely trying to improve my cardio. i am a member at 24hour fitness and i prefer the upright stationary bike to the treadmill. if i do ALL of my cardio work on the bike, will i have near the same overall physical results as i would get on a treadmill?

Answer
You burn far more calories jogging on a treadmill than you do pedaling an upright bike. A gym bike is one of the LEAST efficient pieces of cardio equipment. But if you're walking slowly on the treadmill, sure, the bike is a better bet, as long as you have some resistance on it.

Here's the breakdown for a 140 lb body for 1 hour of exercise on various pieces of equipment:

Upright bike (12 mph) - 401 calories

Stairmaster (moderate pace) - 488 calories

Elliptical Trainer (moderate pace) - 501 calories

Treadmill (jogging 6 mph) - 668 calories

What's the differences of different types of exercise bikes?

quality recumbent exercise bikes
on Lifecycle Recumbent Exercise Bikes For Life Fitness
quality recumbent exercise bikes image

Ivy

I want to purchase an exercise bike but I found there are so many types such as stationary bikes, recumbent bikes, cardio bikes and etc. What's the differences?

Answer
If your want to slim down by burning extra fats during exercises, you should choose stationary exercise bikes. There are three styles of stationary exercise bikes that include upright, semi-recumbent, and recumbent which are available on different prices. You can ride these bikes while listening to music, reading your favorite book or watching TV.

If you want to increase stamina and also strengthen the muscles in legs, arms and improve the overall functions of heart, the recumbent bike is what you need. This type of exercise bike is designed in ergonomic way, which increases the pedaling efficiency as well as comfort for extended riding. So you can sit in a chair-shaped seat and do pedaling on the pedals out in front. This is special good for those who suffering from lower back pain and joint pain to ride.

The cardio bike works on the cardiovascular system of the body. You can do both easy and hard training on it just with the flick of a wrist. Ride this type of exercise bike can strengthen the muscles of legs; improve the core stability and increase blood flow.

What is the difference between a spinner bike and an exercise bike?

Teresa

I have been researching the spinner bike and it burns tons of calories. The bikes looks just like a regular exercise bike. Have anyone experience riding the spinner bike, is there a difference?

Answer
Hi Teresa! I'm familiar with spinner bikes. Normal users don't seem to care for them. The reason is motivation. A spinner bike is used best at a spinning class (say at the YMCA/YWCA where the teacher/class provide motivation) or purchased by "road warrior" cycling enthusiasts who are highly self motivated to supplement outdoor training when they can't "hit the road". In any event, without cycling or spinning training, a spinner bike should not be considered. With a spinner bike there's shifting involved and normally no programs or electronics to guide the user through a workout. In otherwords, it isn't the spinner bike that burns more calories, but the motivation to push oneself. Also, the average person can't handle the strenuous spinner bike workouts, so paying substantially more for a spinner bike, rather than a normal exercise bike (recumbent or upright) would be a waste of money. In the end, spinning without proper training could actually have a negative impact on a person's outlook, causing them to loose interest in exercising altogether...

You'll get a great cardio workout with either a recumbent or upright exercise bike. Quality exercise bikes will run $500 - $2,000 or more. Stay away from the low end bikes and look for one with a good warranty of 10 years or more. I'd suggest Endurance exercise bikes because they have Lifetime warranties. I hope that helps... Happy exercise bike hunting!

stationary bike 90 minutes a day image

answers!-h

I started gymming recently and yesterday was my first day on the stationary bike. I think my average speed was around 70rpm, I did few short 30- 60 second sprints of 90-100 rpm and then on average speed and cooled down in between. the meter showed 5.5.km for the 18 minutes I was there. I enjoyed this workout the most, but don't know what speed I should cycle at and for what time. Also, does cycling just help you strengthen your leg/thigh muscles only? I am going to continue cycling for sure but I also want a workout which helps reduce waistline and some workout for the upper torso in general. Any recommendations for how long should I be on the treadmill, etc. are also welcome!

Thanks!! :)

What muscles does an exercise bike target?

best exercise bike routine
 on Exercise Bikes
best exercise bike routine image

wendyofthe

The backs of my legs are atrocious. I am really hoping an exercise bike will help tone that area. Will it? And also, where else does it target?

Answer
An exercise on a (stationary) bike is a cardio exercise.

As far as cardio exercise is concerned, toning (if you mean making your legs look leaner and slimmer and have shapes) doesn't come into the picture.

What exercise biking does is just this - moving your leg muscles in the exercise. Other areas of your muscles that get involved are butts and thighs.

Cardio's main area of work is:

1. To strengthen your heart and lungs, to keep them in strong and fit condition - your heart pumps more blood with less effort hence reducing the chance of heart disease while your lungs has increased capacity for oxygen intake, which is beneficial to your cells and organs

2. To kick start your metabolism into higher gear, so you can burn off excess body fat, to lose weight

To tone and define your legs, throw in a leg toning routine that'll help to "shape up" your legs to give them a leaner and sleeker look.

Here's one routine you can try out: http://www.perfect-body-toning.com/leg-workouts.html

Does an exercise bike tone places besides legs?

do i just walk around the house? because my parents don't let me walk around on the streets by myself cos they don't have time to take me. and do i walk at a steady pace or fast?
but doesn't fruits make you gain weight?

Answer
Okay...I only started two Mondays ago and All I do is walk one hour every morning. I wear a calorie counter monitor to loose weight by the numbers. I have already lost one pant size and 10 pounds. I am a woman and have three kids and this is the method I use when I gain weight.. I am now at a size two and everyone is always amazed that I have had three kids. This is what I do below when I throw on a few extra pounds. It always works..No diet pills, no energy drinks..just me walking and getting the water I need. Of course I watch what I eat and the Lean Cuisine meals are great for that since the calories per box are 180 to 380 per box. Just make sure you eat healthy every three to four hours so your body will perform at its max.

Here it is:

Helpful Tips for weight loss:

1)A good way to loose weight is to use a calorie counter watch

Keep to a 1,200 food intake

Add 1,200 plus 3,500 (equals one pound of fat) ...and that is the total amount of calories you need to burn each day. Its actually really easy once you start watching the numbers and it doesn't seem like work or exercise. Its just a matter of changing the way you think about loosing weight.

I use this method when i gain some pounds. The first time I did this I went from 168 to 127

2) Most people do not get enough water in their system. Water is your body's principal chemical component, comprising, on average, 60 percent of your weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. To determine if you are getting enough water use this simple formula.. Take your weight, for example 150 pounds and divide by 2. Take your answer which is 75 lbs and change it to ounces, in this case 75 ounces. That is how many ounces of water you need a day. Your body performs mostly on water. If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.

How much weight could I lose a week by eating salad and exercising 2 1/2 to 3 hrs a day?

C~Ya

My plan is to eat salad only with lots of veggies and occaisionally some boneless skinless chicken for protein. I will also be going to the gym after work for about 2 1/2 to 3 hrs and working primarily on eliptical trainers, treadmill, exercise bikes, and the occaisional strength building exercises for my mid-section. Does anyone know an estimation of how the weight will begin to come off. Currently I'm a 22 yr old female and weigh apprx. 185 lbs. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Damn! lol Iâm bout to do that same diet, I wish you the best of luck.. I did that diet routine about a year 6 months ago, and I lost a good 25lbs in a month.. but remember your body burns 12 Calories a pound, and it takes 3,500 calories to burn one pound of fat. I would say at the gym burn at least 750 a day!

There are 20 levels, 1 is the easiest to move the pedals and level 20 is when you have to really push to get the pedals moving. I do 15 minutes of my workout on this bike. I normally go at level 7 just because I can manage longer and my legs don't burn like crazy. When I do level 12 or something, my legs burn too much and I feel like stopping after like 5 mins. I'm worried if I choose a very low level, I won't lose fat.

What level is best to choose to lost fat in 15 minutes?
no out of my whole workout, I spend 15 minutes on the bike, AFTER 30 mins on the treadmill

Answer

The concept is quite easy. Cycling is a a event of stamina.... So you want a balance between effort and exertion. You want to spin the pedals at a minimum cadence of 70 rpm throughout the length of your ride. This with only MODERATE pedal pressure. That is called spinning.... Which is the way to ride a bike correctly. It allows for the modern cyclist to,do both distance with speed .... With little fatigue.

How to use a stationary bike?

in school i use a stationary bike and i am looking to loose some fat. how do i use my 35 minutes a day w, the bike? low or high resistance? when i stand, sit, etc..

Answer
You want to do a 10 min warm up at a easy resistance. After the warm up set the resistance to where you can still talk but not sing. You want to keep you cadence at 70-90 rpm's with a lite pressure on the pedals. If you need to catch your breath or your legs start to hurt reduce the resistance to recover but keep pedaling. You can also do interval training where you can stand and pedal for a short period of time then drop back to recover.

A high cadence with a lite pressure on the pedals will use your slow twitch muscles that use fat as a fuel. Pedaling slow and mashing on the pedals will use fast twitch muscles that use glycogen as a fuel and will wear out you legs quickly.

You can work in some slower cadence mashing on the pedals into your workout if you like. It will work your hamstring and gluts a little more.

At the moment i am trying to lose weight, i have about 31/2 stone to lose. I go on the exercise bike every morning and burn around 500 calories and i am watching my calories when i eat so i am averaging about 800 calories each day, but i dont seem to be losing weight how can improve my weight loss and what am i doing wrong?

Answer
Eat more! Don't be fooled because the article is referring to more of healthy, low-fat foods rather than junk food. Junk food can range from burgers to those cookies that you always bought! Adding a lot of vegetables and fruits to your diet will help you. Also, drinking bouillon, a Haitian soup, made with filtered water will help you feel full.

BasketballExercise every day! This could be the most difficult step to follow. But what you can do is actually start slowly then steady increase the amount of exercise. For example, today you will walk for 10 minutes, repeat this for the whole week. For the next week, double your workload. You may get leaner that way! The important thing is to get your heart rate up and start, now!
Feed your temptations once in a while. Go ahead and have that donut or slice of pizza, but before you do, drink a few glasses of water and eat a bowl of raw veggies such as cucumbers, celery, carrots, and tomatoes. They will fill you up and you will have very little room to eat the "junk" food.

Scrumptious!Consume things that have no calories. There are two things you eat and drink that contain no calories: water and fiber. The more of these you get into your diet, the better off you will be. For example, you can eat a pound of mixed salad greens with assorted raw vegetables (carrots, red cabbage, celery, broccoli, onion, etc.) with a low or no-calorie salad dressing and only have eaten 100-150 calories. This is because of the high water and fiber content of the salad and low calorie dressing. Also, eat lots of celery. It has only 8 calories, but amazingly, it takes more than 8 calories to digest it. So, you actually BURN calories by eating celery! It's not much, about 2 calories per 8 inch stalk, but it sure doesn't hurt.
Avoid sodas as much as possible. Instead, drink flavored water or unsweetened iced tea.
Take broth-based soups. They are a relatively low in calories. A commerically-available ready to eat "chicken and stars" soup may only have 80 calories for 1 serving, much less than diet "meal shakes" or nutrition bars.

These may help you.Practice good eating habits. Always use utensils and sit at the table. This stops you from eating precariously. Eating with your hands will mean that you take in more food in one scoop. Don't forget to eat slowly and stop when you're full. Similar to the above step, if you can't stop, drink up! Maybe your body is thirsty and hungry no more! Also, you can do any other chores (other than eating). For instance, go shopping, or play badminton with your friend, or play games on the computer!
Spread out your diet! Eat more small chunks of meals, rather than 3 big meals. If you eat 100-150 calories or so every two hours, your body stays in a higher-metabolism digesting mode. This allows you to burn more calories than eating just 3 meals a day.[1]

I am looking for a bike, $150 or less. I don't know what exactly to look for in a mountain bike. I'll be using it for leisure and for exercise, I would like a bike with resistance levels. How tall of a bike should I get for my 5'3 height? Where is a good place to see a selection of reasonably priced mountain bikes? Big 5? Walmart?

Answer
walmart, get one that says rust proof. the sell one called the(Skyliner). its more of a cruiser and more comfortable than a mountain bike. Has front shocks and 15 speed. wide tires and stainless and alum. parts so it wont rust. about that price..mountain bike not that comfortable.

How many caloires will I burn by going on my exercise bike 2 hours a day?

Meow

For my exercise, Im planning on going on my exercise bike 2 hours a day. How many calories can you burn while being on an exercise bike for 2 hours? Im 160 pounds and 5'8. And Im doing a 1200 calorie diet.

Answer
Depending on how hard you work out, you could burn upwards of 900 calories a day. That kind of vigorous exercise will require that you eat more than just 1200 calories a day or you won't have enough energy to do these big workouts.

what is the best type of bike for neighborhood, sidewalk, city biking for adults?

I want to buy a bike for me and 1 for my husband. Looking for comfort, espcially in the knees, back and neck. Mostly for rides approximately 2-5 miles over city terrain. I am hopeing to spend less than $500 a piece. Thanks

Answer
The general category of bike which would suit your described riding type best is called a "hybrid" bike.
A hybrid bike is a bike which blends some of the best functions of both "road bikes" (racing style) and "mountain bikes" (off road bikes)
The end result is a bike with an upright, comfortable seating position of a Mountain bike, and the wide range of gear ratios of the same, combined with the lighter rolling resistance of 700c diameter wheels, as opposed to smaller 26" wheels found on mountain bike.
Tires on hybrid bikes also strike a balance between the ultra skinny tires of road bikes, which are harsh, due to very high air pressure (over 100psi), and prone to flat, vs. big knobby tires of dedicated off road Mountain bikes, which are heavy and slow rolling on paved surfaces
In the category of Hybrid bikes, some have a front suspension, or shock absorber front fork, and possible even shock absorber seat post; meanwhile other bikes forgo this feature, and have standard fixed fork and seat post.
Unless you plan to take dirt trails, or ride on very rough pavement surfaces, I would forgo the "suspension" type components.
Seeing how people tend to neglect all thing mechanical, and noting they add weight, and often cost, for very little "on road" benefit, adds to my assertion to keep it simple.
if you lived in the very flat parts of the USA like the plains of illinois and indiana; and/or you have no intention of ever doing More than just the 2-5 miles of city riding, you could actually get by with a single speed bike or 3 speed bike, which are acceptable, but I am going to make the assumption that this might be something you fall in love with doing and a hybrid bike is something you could eventually "make a day of it" with, and really get out and see the world by bike eventually, even up to 30 miles in a single day!
You should not worry about "brand name" since at your price point, most frames are produced in Taiwan and repainted and labeled for different brands. Taiwan makes very excellent bike frames.
Components (brakes, wheels, etc) of the bike which will give you good service come from the brands Shimano and Cane Creek and even SRAM at this price point. However,be wary of anything coming from mainland China or Korea.
Your best and safest bet is to purchase the bike from a local bike store, instead of a department store such as target or Costco. You will pay a little more ($50-$75) for a bike from a local bike store,However the bike store has staff which will fit you to a bike, often provide between one year and up to life time "tune-ups" and really be there to help you along the way to developing an improving ability to bicycle.
One tune up at the bike store, if you purchase the bike elsewhere will cost you more than the $75 you saved at Costco, and you will have a product with service support like a new car with a warranty. This benefit will keep you riding instead of having a bike parked all the time because its is not functioning properly.
All new bikes require adjustments! cable stretch, and things get wonky until the cable get settled stretching, and the adjustments are tedious. This is the biggest reason people stop riding, that and something as simple as a flat tire, so buy a pump with the 2 bikes.
if you consistently ride even once per week, 2-5 miles you describe can become 10-15 in just one year! This is because it becomes very easy to achieve a 10-12 mile per hour fitness level, and that would mean 10 miles is one about an hour of exercise.
Take your time and progress slowly, comfort and enjoyment during the first months will fuel your enjoyment to progress over time.
The first accessories I recommend are a pair of Helmets, and NEVER ride without them. All helmets work, so $25 is enough to pay.
Get the local bike store to sell you a water bottle cage, and GIVE you a free water bottle with the purchase of the bikes.
Next get some bike gloves. these will reduce numbness as you ride and protect your hands if you ever have a little mishap. finally if you start to ride more than 5 miles, you'll want some bike shorts, even if you wear them under regular clothes, for comfort of the padding in the seat of the shorts, but those can wait until you have begun to enjoy the sport.
Good luck and feel free to ask more questions!

Where can I buy a cheap treadmill?

Aimee

I looked online at Costco but its treadmills are like 600 bucks...and then at walmart it's about $300..is there a place that sells treadmills cheaper than that? My mom really doesn't want to buy it online at some store she's never heard of..is it even safe?

Answer
I don't recommend you buy one at walmart or anything less than 300. I repair them, and the treadmills in those price not only break down very easily, they aren't worth repairing. If you really want one for less than, I suggest you buy used off craigslist. And don't buy a Weslo brand. Give it a thorough test before you bring it home, because many have something wrong with it.

You're safest bet is just to get the one at Costco. Costco has a treadmill made by Nordic Track that would cost 3 times as much at any other store. It's a great treadmill with a ton of features, a powerful motor and a descent warranty, besides, Costco will take anything back.

Take what I am saying seriously, I know what I'm talking about. If the suggestions I've given just don't appeal to you, consider not getting a treadmill and just walk/run outside or get a different piece of excercise equipment. You don't want to spend money on something that will just break and take up space in your home do you? Treadmills take an unholy pounding and that is why they break, so if you want to go cheap, try an exercise bike, an elliptical, a ball, a weight set or a trampoline. They last longer for the dollar because they take less of an impact. If you want a good treadmill, be willing to pay for it. Otherwise, walking outside really isn't bad.

What is the name of it instead of you sitting up it's lower but it looks like a bike just your legs or stretched in front of you not down. Also what are the benefits to it. What does it work out?

Answer
it is a recumbent stationary bike.

biggest issue is comfort, seat is bigger and your back and neck aren't as stressed. easier to read or watch tv. IMHO, you get a little bit less of a workout.

primary benefit is cardio (heart, lungs) also works quads, hamstrings and butt.

My bottom hurts while riding a recumbent bike?

George

I ride a recumbent bije once a day for 32 minutes at around 95 rpm (or as the bike says 20 mph) when I get to about the 25 minute mark my bottom starts to hurt. Is there anyway I combat this? It makes the last 7 minutes quite unpleasant.

Answer
I take it you're riding a recumbent exercise machine, not a true recumbent bike. Recumbent trainers have horrible seats. The hurt is because you're asking soft flabby muscles to work while they're being compressed by your weight. It'll get better as the muscles get toned and/or you lose some weight. On a REAL recumbent bike, you could alleviate the paint (it's called 'recumbent butt' or simply 'recumbutt') by reclining the seat more; but recumbent trainers usually don't allow it.

If the pain gets to be too much, just take a 2-minute break before doing the last 7 minutes. Once you let the blood back into the muscles, you'll be good to go again.

How do i go about buying an exercise bike?

Im looking to buy a used exercise bike, but honestly, i have no idea what to look for!
What qualities should i look for in the bike? I wanted to find something relatively cheap, but i also dont want something thats a complete piece of junk you know?
Any advice?

Answer
There are 3 general categories of exercise bike:
1. Upright resistance. The upright uses a flywheel or fan for resistance. Stay away from the fan since they are much louder. Flywheel types often use belts or other friction material so always check them if buying a used one.
2. Recumbent. This is the one where you sit low to the ground and put your legs out forward. These are good if you have a back condition. The only true way to see if you like them is to try them for a workout. They have similar resistance units to the upright types.
3. Spinner. These have a direct drive meaning they don't allow you to stop pedaling unless you have an emergency stop device. They are probably the best workout, but are definitely not for everyone especially if you have knee trouble.

A quick and dirty way to see the condition of the unit is to check ride it, check the pedals for wear and if they're bent. You'll also be able to listen and see if the resistance unit feels smooth and quiet. If not, something is wrong and walk away.

Try all 3 types out at a local health club. That's the best way to see what works for you. You can often pay for just one visit and not have to get a membership.
Try the local classifieds and CraigsList in you local for a used one and hopefully have a friend with minivan or pickup. Used is the only way that you'll get a worthwhile unit for low cost.

Is magnetic resistance or digital resistance better for an exercise bike?

Jennifer i

Hi. I am currently recovering from a knee injury and am unable to resume my regular form of exercise (walking and jogging). I have heard that bikes are one of the best forms of exercise for those with knee injuries (that and swimming). I am looking at buying a stationary recumbent bike for my house. I have been comparing a number of different models. A few have magnetic resistance and a few have digital resistance. Is one better than the other? Is one quieter than the other? I've always done most of my exercising outside and have never bought an indoor exercise bike. Also, what are some good brands for recumbent bikes ($300-$500). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Neither.
1) Real bicycle - preferably a road bike
2) FLUID resistance trainer w/variable adjustment handlebar mounted shift lever
http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10054_10551_1094975_-1_400133__400133

So besides the normal gears on the bike, the trainer also offers a lever to increase or decrease resistance. You'll need a riser block for under the front tire.
http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10054_10551_1028769_-1_400037__400037

Look through craigslist & other on-line sites for those selling slightly used equipment first. People often by indoor exercise equipment & then find out the hard way it's BORING & not for them. Then sell it for pennies on the dollar. Found mine for a mere $65 - including the riser block. You'll need a slick tread rear tire on the bike to minimize noise levels. Some type of mat or old carpet remnant under the unit also helps.
