I have an exercise bike, but would running be more effective for weight loss?
I want to build as minimal muscle as possible.
Or is there a better way then both of these?
Also, with running, I'm concerned of getting attacked by a dog.

Answer
Both are good for weight loss, but the most important thing is to get your heart rate to 80 percent of it's max for about 30 minutes at a time. If you don't want to gain that much muscle, it would probably be better to run because cycling will really build your leg muscles. If you run, you're also moving your arms so you will also give them a little tone. I hole heartedly understand your fear of getting attacked by a dog. My sophomore year of college, I lived in a really rundown neighborhood and had a neighbor who kept her german shepherd outside all the time which was fine until she gave birth. After that, the dog became quite territorial and even though she was familiar with me would sometimes chase me. After it happened twice, I decided to go running at parks where dogs were required to be kept on their leash at all times since I couldn't afford a gym membership. If you can make it to a swimming pool 3-5 days a week, you might want to consider that too. Swimmers, in my opinion, have some of the best bodies out there. No matter what workout you choose, make sure to stretch a couple of times a day. This will help lengthen your muscles over time, so you still get the strength and tone from the muscle you gain from working out to give you more of a sleek build. Good luck on your weight loss and don't forget to eat smart.

How many miles on an exercise bike?

SunnyDelig

What should be a daily goal of miles to ride on an exercise bike each day?
For a good weight loss?

Answer
you should do four forty five minute sessions a week, and your body becomes acclimated to exercise after doing the same ole thing. So make sure you mix it up, walk, run, bike, sprint, jump rope, stairs, elliptical, row machine, boxing and kickboxing. 45 minute sessions because you don't start burning fat til 15minutes into cardio exercise.

I want to use it while on the treadmill or on a recumbent bike. I need motivation and the feeling of walking in Hawaii or in the Black Hills or exploring Luray Caverns in Virginia or walking through the Louvre might help. I tried the i-Fit DVDs and videotapes, but they have annoying instructors. All I want is music (maybe) and the illusion of walking or biking on the beach or in the mountains. A commentary might not be bad; the problem with the i-Fit tapes is that they periodically stop the virtual reality portion of the tape to focus on the instructor. If I wanted an exercise tape, a la Jane Fonda or the curly-haired guy, I'd buy one.

I checked on Collage Video, and the Video Cycle or Video Stride videos seem to be what you are looking for:

100 pushups and situps a day every day cept for 1 day a week, then on every other day ride a bike 2 miles?

How much weight could i expect to lose like that mixxed in with semi healthy eating?

Answer
not a lot, especially with "semi healthy" eating. if you're serious about losing weight, you need to eat healthy, not "semi" healthy(not rabbit food, just balanced).

bike riding 2 miles is a very short period of time, i can do 6 on the recumbent with a book and not break a sweat. if you don't want to go to the gym, ride your bike more,(if you can ride your bike there, why drive? save gas, money, and burn calories and ride at a higher gear if you can), and add more things you can do at home.

-lunges
-hand weights
-resistance bands
-jumping jacks
-lift your arms up, and tilt your torso to one side, straighten up, and do the other. that'll work your "love handles."
-the classic women's aerobics leg exercise: lay on your side and lift your higher leg up and down, back and forth, and in circles. wrap that leg over your lower, and do little lifts with your lower legs. switch sides. you'll work your quads, outer thighs, and inner thighs, even if you feel really silly doing it. i'm a girl and i do.
-get a video or a game, like Yourself! Fitness for PS2.

What exercises are good for building physical stamina?

best exercise bikes for beginners

best exercise bikes for beginners image

JustinP

I've lived an extremely sedentary lifestyle for the past 2 years and gained 20 pounds or so. I lost about 10 pounds changing my diet, but I need to exercise to lose the rest of it. Because I'm not used to any physical activity, I almost immediately get tired and my heart rate skyrockets. What are some good "starter" excercises to increase my stamina so that I can get into some serious exercise?

Answer
Cardiovascular Endurance Workouts

Cardiovascular endurance exercises are used mainly by sportsmen and
sports coaches, to increase their cardiovascular endurance. As the
games start becoming tougher and tougher, it is essential that the
cardiovascular endurance of the players increases too. Hence, it is
essential to keep up with the demanding nature of today's games and do
the exercises. They are also some of the best fat burning exercises.

Running
Undoubtedly the mother of all cardiovascular exercises is running.
In this simple exercise you have to try running for as long as you can
on a treadmill or on an empty ground. A treadmill may be advantageous,
as it will help you maintain a constant speed for a predefined amount
of time. The focus should be on how long you can run and not how fast
you can run. Try running at a speed, which you are comfortable with,
for 15-20 minutes. Once you realize that you can run more, increase
the speed.

Exercise Bike
Exercise Bike can be another cardiovascular endurance exercise, if
you decide to push yourself harder. Use the exercise bike for about
15-20 minutes and gradually try increasing the speed. Another option
is to try increasing the incline of or resistance of your bike and
still try riding at the same speed. This too will help build your
cardiovascular endurance.

Step Machines
Quite frankly, I find the step machine really boring, but if you are
really focused on your cardiovascular endurance exercise, the step
machine is something you ought not to miss. The step machine is like
an escalator moving downwards while you try to climb. Crank it up to
the speed with which you are comfortable and do it for another 15-20
minutes. Once you get used to the speed, increase it.

Skip-Rope
It may sound childish, but jumping the skip rope at a fast pace for
about 10-15 minutes is not at all easy but a really good
cardiovascular endurance exercise. And you aren't allowed to take a
break in between so watch it! Once you can do 10-15 minutes, try for
around 20 minutes.

Push-Ups
Push-Ups are one of the cardiovascular muscular endurance exercises.
The key is to do as many as you can in one set and do them
explosively. Breathe out hard every time you push yourself up. Do as
many as you can in one set, take rest for about 2 minutes and do
another set. 3 sets of push ups would be a good workout routine.

Chin-Ups
Chin-ups are quite hard for beginners to do, so I will not suggest a
number for how many chin-ups to do in a set. You can do the chin-ups
in a pattern similar to that of push-ups, that is 1 set minimum and 3
sets of each.

Triceps-Dips
Triceps dips are another good form of improving cardiovascular
endurance. Triceps dips can again be done in a similar format as
push-ups.

Ideally, you should do the cardiovascular endurance exercises three
times a week. You can do three of these six aerobic exercises a day
and then shuffle between them over three days a week, which you have
allocated for your cardio workout. Remember, the key to a
cardiovascular endurance workout is quite easy. Take your normal
workouts and increase the speed, resistance and/or the time duration
for which you do them.

What are some brands I should look into for Down hill Mountain Biking?

Tom

I've been looking for some new hobbies and mountain biking has really peaked my interest. Mostly down hill. Those guys have serious balls.

Anyway, what are some good brands that I should look for when I decide to finally purchase a down hill mountain bike? Especially for beginners. It doesn't have to be something extremely top of the line, just a bike sturdy enough to go shredding on.
And what brands for helmets, pads, etc are pretty good?

Answer
Cycling is definitely an very effective and effective mode of transportation optimal for brief to reasonable distances. Bicycles provide numerous benefits compared to motor autos, such as exercise, an option towards the use of fossil fuels, no air or noise pollution, a lot decreased traffic congestion, simpler parking, greater maneuverability, and access to each roads and paths. The benefits are at less financial price towards the user as well as culture (negligible damage to roads, and less pavement needed). Criticisms and drawbacks of cycling consist of decreased protection in crashes, especially with motor autos, longer journey time (except in densely populated areas), vulnerability to weather conditions, difficulty in transporting passengers, and the ability and fitness needed.

Q. ive just recently started riding a bike, been riding a cheap mountain bike someone gave me and have decided to invest in a good road bike,I don't want to spend more than $1500.i have a bad back so figure the lighter bicycle might be good can anyone recommend tips on buying a decent bike?

Answer
Buy a recumbent. If you go to physical therapy for your back, you are going to ride a recumbent exercise bike.

I have had lower back surgery and now ride a Lightning recumbent. I still have my mountain bike but sold my road bike soon after getting the recumbent.

You can get the exercise you need and still be comfortable on the recumbent.

where can you find a really cheap treadmill?

anonymous*

for like maybe $100-150 that folds up to save space.

Answer
Most places such as Walmart, Target, and Sears carry manual treadmills that cost in that price range.

You can also check used sports stores in your city, or the classified ads to get great deals. I got a recumbent exercise bike valued at around 500 dollars for just 50 bucks!

widowmaker

I live in Rock Island Illinois on the Mississippi River and right know it is flooded. Please help answer only if you know the area.

Answer
Hey, Widowmaker, don't take this as a wisecrack, but you need to get out from behind that computer, leave the house, and do a little exploring of your home area, if you're capable that is. I mean, it would be hard to do if you're handicapped, or something similar. Computers, cellphones, and stuff like that weren't around when I was a kid, but we had bicycles, and we'd ride them for hours on end, travelling all of the backroads all over Lake County, Indiana. Pull up a google satellite map of your locale, spend some time researching the different roads that lead to parks with ponds, but for private property, you'll have to go ask the owner's permission to fish his/her waters, and if they let you use their property, make sure you don't trash it up, or go there when they are not around, so get on a bike, have some fun, get some exercise. It will be challenging, but if you are sincere, and determined, you'll find a way to make it all work out for you.

How to lose weight for teens?

o.O B

Is there a way to lose weight without dieting? For teens? I don't think I should diet, but I have cut down on sugars and fats. I'm not too fat, but im not as skinny as i wish. I want to have a flatter stomach, skinnier arms, and skinner thighs. Please help. And if it helps I'm 13 soon to be 14.

Answer
I'm also a teenager so I hope I can help you.

The first step is to eat right.

It's good for teenagers to eat healthier so that when they become adults they have the habits down and are healthier. Eating well is good for your hair and your skin- and not to mention that when I ate healthier I noticed my cuts and bruises healed very quickly. You feel better when you eat well and you will look better too- so why not?

Don't skip out on eating- you'll feel terrible and your metabolism will slow down so that the weight may come back or be harder to lose. Also, if you skip out on eating you can develop anorexia and anorexia is so hard to cure and you'll have the mindset that food is bad and you'll feel guilty about eating.

For eating well you should eat plenty of vegetables. It sounds kind of gross right? But it doesn't have to be! You can steam vegetables and they will be delicious. I like salads with fat free dressing (fat free dressing doesn't have as many calories- just don't go overboard on the dressing!!) and you can always look online for good recipes for vegetables. I'm sure that there will be something you like that is also healthy for you. Vegetables don't have many calories and contain a lot of vitamins, which is pretty nice. Don't forget the other food groups either. Just be careful of meat- you want to eat lean meat. Meat with loads of fat in it isn't going to help you.

Exercise is second.
If you don't like running, go on bike rides. That's what I do. Check your area (Google Maps might help too) for bike trails. Be careful when biking though because you don't want to get hurt. Listening to music on an ipod is fun to do when biking. Make a playlist of songs you want to listen to before you go. You can always walk with a friend too.

You say that you want to have a flatter stomach, skinnier arms, and skinnier thighs. Try Pilates! I actually found a website not very long ago that really can be helpful when trying to live a healthier lifestyle or lose weight and it's http://www.livestrong.com/
It has a calorie tracker and everything, it's really great and I strongly recommend using it.
Be sure to burn off the calories you gain everyday and really work at it. Never give up, it may take a while to lose the weight. I remember hearing a teacher I used to have who is really into sports saying that it may even take three weeks for a body to change and how people give up after a week. Ask your family for help- they can really help keeping you on focus and buying foods that will help.

I hope I helped!!

best exercise bikes for cardio image

Jon G

In college I used exercise bikes frequently and it really helped my stamina when I ran long distances. Im just wondering if the exercise bike helps shed some stomach fat.

Answer
Exercise does not burn fat in any selective area. You burn fat throughout your entire body. If you want to tone up your stomach areas, you should do some ab-specific exercises in addition to your cardio workouts.

I do a lot of cycling, it's a great cardio workout and not as tough on the knees and joints as running is, although running and cycling work different muscle groups.

i had a baby 1 year ago and i have the baby pouch!! i have a exercise bike though...will that help? where does it burn fat from?

Answer
For women, fat is burned from the arms, face, legs, butt then waist. Pretty much wherever fat showed up first...becomes the LAST place it leaves your body.

Ride that bike before breakfast and burn DOUBLE the calories and fat. When exercising on an empty stomach- your body uses stored body fat as the only energy source!

How can you lose belly fat in 9 weeks and 3 days?

dark_demen

I can say, I can pinch an inch. This is the first I have tried to do anything about it. The only workout avalible to me is a DDR mat and an exercise bike. Can some one tell me what to do each day and for how long?

My diet is mostly junk food but rarly vegies and fruits.
I'm still a teen.

Answer
Central obesity, commonly referred to as belly fat, is the accumulation of fat deposited between the internal organs in the torso resulting in an increase in waist size. There is a strong correlation between central obesity and cardiovascular disease.

While central obesity can be obvious just by looking at the naked body , the severity of central obesity is determined by taking waist and hip measurements. The absolute waist circumference (>102 centimetres in men and >88 centimetres in women) and the waist-hip ratio (>0.9 for men and >0.85 for women) are both used as measures of central obesity.

Prevention

Performing adequate aerobic exercise and eating a healthy diet prevent central obesity, and losing weight via these methods is the main way to reverse the condition.

Aerobic exercise

Aerobic exercise refers to exercise that involves or improves oxygen consumption by the body. Aerobic means âwith oxygenâ, and refers to the use of oxygen in the bodyâs metabolic or energy-generating process. Many types of exercise are aerobic, and by definition are performed at moderate levels of intensity for extended periods of time. To obtain the best results, an aerobic exercise session involves a warming up period, followed by at least 20 minutes of moderate to intense exercise involving large muscle groups, and a cooling down period at the end.

Healthy diet

A healthy diet involves consuming nutrients by eating the appropriate amounts from all of the food groups, including an adequate amount of water. Since human nutrition is complex, a healthy diet may vary widely, and is subject to an individualâs genetic makeup, environment, and health. For around 20% of the human population, lack of food and malnutrition are the main impediments to healthy eating.Conversely, people in developed countries have the opposite problem; they are more concerned about obesity.

I read this novel in the 5th or 6th grade so the details I have are a bit cloudy. The few things I can remember is that it was about a girl and she loved to ride her exercise bike. I'm pretty sure she was anorexic or something as well. I think her mother was troubled. I think the title might have the name of a vegetable in it? Or maybe I'm confusing myself. If anyone has any help at all, it's greatly appreciated!

I think it would be good to get an exercise bike so when I am just sitting here watching TV I can get exercise! Winter is pretty much here and I wanted to start running but it is way too cold and I know I could never do it!

I just want to know if it's worth buying one? Would I lose weight if I used it an hour every other day?? Are they worth spending $500 on?

Answer
Yes, they work if you use them.

If the $500 version has some features that allow you to program terrain, with various sized hills and flats, etc., that might help make it more interesting to ride. Otherwise, $500 is a little steep for a simple exercise bike that has only a manual resistance control.

It takes weeks for the results to begin to show (well, unless you ride about 50 miles a day, that is), but with steady use, you'll burn some calories, but more importantly, you'll raise your metabolism on the average so that you'll begin to notice a reduction in your appetite (initially, exercise stimulates appetite, so be careful in the beginning) and eventually, a reduction in your weight. Good luck!

Is 15 mins on the treadmill and 15 mins on an exercise bike every day going to help me tone and lose weight?

Tasha

I do not like exercising at all, I never really have! I have just started eating a lot healthier and trying to start an exercise routine that will help me firm, tone and lose weight. Will this help or is there a simple daily routine I can do on the treadmill and exercise bike and get results?

Answer
Losing weight, yes. But toning? Very little, I would say.

You see, cardio exercises (i.e. the treadmill & biking exercises you mentioned) help hike up your metabolism to higher levels, making you that much easier to burn off the excess fat from your entire body, to slim you down. That's cardio exercises' main job.

So, for losing weight, cardio exercise is the one you go for. And the treadmill and biking exercises you say you wanna start off with would be good ones for you to experiment with. You don't have to workout every day; workout on alternate days would be better as it helps you prevent injuries and rest your muscle and body.

To get a toned body, you would need to go for strength training exercises (either using weights/resistance or using your own body weight as a resistance) that help build beautiful lean muscle mass in your body. As lean muscle mass is more compact and tighter in form, this thus gives rise to you having a tighter, firmer and leaner muscle groups like arms; thighs; legs; buttocks; chest; abs and hips and etc.

I've a whole body toning program that does just that which you might be interested in: http://www.perfect-body-toning.com/body-toning-exercises.html

Workout 3-4 times per week for 20-30 minutes per session.

Get a good used bike off of Craig's list, Ebay, classifieds , or garaga sales. Try rto saty with Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, or Giant.... BUT KNOW THE SIZE FRAME YOU NEED!

More importantly. to exercise with out the stress on knees and koints you need how to prosperly pedal. To do that you need to learn how to 'spin' the pedals. If you do not know use this forum to get the info. Do Not 'mash' the pedals, ie pedaling at too slow of a speed with too mush pressure. 'Spinning' is the proper way top ride a bike. Mashing will cause you almost as much stress and strain as running!

How do I start to sell and buy things on Ebay/Amazon or Craigslist?

Shankquill

I would like to start selling purses that I have already and with that money buy more and sell them for a profit which site is the best and any advice?

Answer
Thankfully, Gaytheist Buddha above me is wrong.
I make money on both eBay and Craigslist regularly and have done it for over 2 years.

Do not listen to losers who sit around playing video games and watch reruns of Lost while accomplishing nothing in their lives. You can sell your purses.

I began by trying to sell things I already owned but did not need anymore. My first sale was of an old cell phone and charger. I did not think it would sell. To my surprise, the auction had many bidders. While I did not get rich, the phone sold for more than I expected. I sold a few more household items including old books and clothes.

Now I buy things at garage sales, estate sales, pawn shops, thrift stores, and on Craigslist for the express purpose of reselling them for profit. Even though I work a full time job, I earn between $300 and $1000 extra every month, depending on my luck and the time of year. One month I made over $3000 doing this part time.

Just some examples of countless things I have sold on eBay are...

Belkin wireless router - paid $3, sold for $46
Antique doll bed - paid $20, sold for $94
Uniden Police scanner radio- paid $12, sold for $187.50
Two hand-carved wooden ducks- paid $1, sold for $30.
Garcia fishing reel- paid $4, sold for $75

Exercise treadmill bought on Craigslist for $100 - sold on Craigslist for $250
Exercise bike bought at garage sale for $10- sold on Craigslist for $60

I buy and sell old electronics, games, clothes, baby toys and clothes, old books, rare coins and currency, sporting goods, fashion accessories, collectibles, porcelain china, and antiques. Many sell very well and the profit is great. Others do not sell at all. You must be careful what you buy.

Purses sell relatively good on eBay. It depends on your ad.
People on eBay will buy almost anything.

Writing a good eBay ad is very important. Be sure to list all the features and benefits of your items. You MUST be able to take clear, bright, and sharp pictures of your items. Very important.

eBay has excellent tutorials on how to sell online. They are much better than me trying to tell you how. I just want to encourage you to proceed with your idea and do not listen to losers who say it will be too difficult or that you will fail before you even try. That is why they never succeed at anything. I have done it regularly for over 2 years and it is easy once you learn how. More importantly, it is FUN.

The guy above me is wrong. If you price you item too high, it will not sell. The trick is to get people bidding against each other with a auction listing that is written very well. Start with a low price! I start every auction at 99 cents, no matter how much I paid for it. I have never lost money or been disappointed. People will not look at your auction if starting price or shipping is too high. Charge only the actual price of shipping, nothing more. http://USPS.com will help you.

Good Luck.

Answer
In my bike group, there are always a few people use recumbent bikes. Some people move from road bike to recumbent because they develop back problems. Because it's low to the ground, it has good aerodynamics. Because of the body position, you will be using somewhat different muscle groups when you pedal. As well, you won't have the option to switch between standing and sitting like road bike. So you lose the leverage of body weight during hill climbing. However, they usually keep up with other bikes very well.

I started using the recumbent bike machine at the gym for an hour, i sweat a little and it says i lost 420 calories, will this exercise be an effective way to lose weight?

Answer
Biking is the most effective way to do low intensity fat burning aerobics. A recumbent bike is great for people with weight issues or back problems as youâre sitting comfortably and your body is in a position that lighten your upper bodyâs weight on your ischium (the bony end of your pelvis on which youâre sitting).

The downside is that it could be boring, unless youâre reading or watching TV but that can become an upside as you can completely zone out and almost forget youâre biking, until your speed starts to decrease (when youâre running out of blood sugar) so you cool down and stop.
Be flexible and donât âbike for an hourâ. You warm up for 5 minutes (getting up in your THR zone), then you do 20 minutes, then you go from there. Some days, youâll stop and cool down for 5 minutes (for a total workout of 30 minutes). Other days, you can keep going for 1 or 2 hours (you slept very well and ate a good high carbs meal 2 hours prior).

You need to train your upper body (like swimming/aerobics and weight training/anaerobics) as a bike does not do that, unless youâre using an upright stationary bike with moving handles.

Fit people who use recumbent bikes outside (or runners) have to train their upper body with some other forms of exercising.

Walk too. Walking wonât burn as many calories as biking but you do it for 3 main reasons: itâs the most basic form for the human body to move forward (even on a treadmill), it challenges your body in different ways (youâre still using the lower body but differently) and last but not least, it allows you to avoid boredom as youâre not doing the same thing every day.

For weight loss, synchronize your meals with your exercising so you get a high carbs meal 2 hours prior (for energy, for an easy and efficient workout), like breakfast (morning workout) or lunch (afternoon workout) and then you get the next meal post exercise, once you cool down, stretch, stop sweating, take a shower/bath, allow enough time for your body to stop releasing chemicals (to prevent pain so you can keep going). Those natural chemicals (endorphins, epinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine that are released after 30 minutes) make you feel goodâ¦happy, energetic. Then hunger strikes as you need to replenish your blood sugar level. If you time it right, youâll dive into your next meal and not have to snack.
Use a slow cooker. You can cook healthy as you donât need extra fats. You donât need how to cook. Just add the right ingredients (if you use online recipes, use fresh veggies and avoid processed food...those recipes are from companies pushing their products). You donât need to supervise. If you open the lid, then you have to add 20 minutes. I was annoyed at my husband and kids opening the lid out of hunger and curiosity because it smells so good. I told them not to do that, but if they do, they have to tell me so I will add 20 minutes to the cooking time...if youâre hungry, you donât want to do something that will make dinner time 20 minutes farther away.
You can time a slow cooker to coincide with the end of your workout. Your food will not burn as it is very low temperature cooking all day long. Even if itâs ready, you can use the warm setting to keep it warm while you exercise. Youâll get great home cooked meals.

And eat enough calories to cover your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) or your body will adapt to a low caloric intake and lower your metabolism, making it very hard for you to use your body fat. And then, as soon as you would eventually start eating normally again, you would make body fat very easily, because you would have a lower metabolism and therefore regain all the weight you lost and keep going up, unless you exercise A LOT.

Womenâs BMR:
655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - minus (4.7 x age in years)

Menâs BMR:
66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) - minus (6.8 x age in years)

Do not rely on machine readouts (even high quality gym machines can still have a crappy piece made in China for the readout). Know your own personal average calorie expenditure per minute so then you just have to time yourself and not worry about your speed or what aerobic activity you do.
As a point of reference, I would burn 8 calories/minute average. For biking, I can also calculate 32 calories per mile and burn 400 calories in an hour at a slow 12.5mph speed. So your recumbent bike readout is somewhat accurate...not like some people thinking that they burn 700 calories in an hour on a stationary bike because the readout says so!

Still, one pound of body fat is 3,500 calories of exercising (if you eat enough to cover your BMR) so I would have to bike 109 miles to burn one pound of body fat...maybe not even on the scale, as I would hopefully gain some muscle mass, biking 109 miles, especially during the first 3 months of getting in shape.

"nautilus" equip is a brand name, right? What is the generic term for that type of weight machines? Thanks!?

Answer
There is a difference between a design patent (how it looks) and a utility patent (what it does).
Design patents usually last 14 years while utility patents last for 20 years (17 years prior to June 95).

Exercise equipment companies are like car companiesâ¦making and improving new models every year (2010 Product Line) so they can still beat the competition, even if the competition is copying their products. You always have a bunch of people in the R&D department (Research and Development) raking their brain to improve the product, even if sometimes they mess up a good thing (stop making it) just to come up with a newer thing that is not necessarily better.

Your question is like asking âwhat is a brand name of an old model car?â

Numerous companies make home gyms, bikes (recumbent and upright) or treadmills. Very often, what you pay is what you get, as far as the quality goes. Well known companies will spare no expense to come up with the best quality products (they get their parts from USA or Europe but not from China) and the best looking ones and the customer ends up footing the bill but gets a better product.

If youâre looking for a cheaper machine, you might want to buy a good brand second hand, usually barely used and like brand new but half the price. A high percentage of people (some of them with ridiculous amount of money to waste), are selling their exercise equipment when they failed to commit to it and then those machines become a constant reminder of their failure so they canât wait to get rid of them. Others sell their machines because theyâre moving in with somebody who already has machinesâ¦others, just because they need the space for a new roommate or a babyâs room! (the opposite of when your kids move out so you get an exercise room!).

I want to purchase an exercise bike but I found there are so many types such as stationary bikes, recumbent bikes, cardio bikes and etc. What's the differences?

Answer
If your want to slim down by burning extra fats during exercises, you should choose stationary exercise bikes. There are three styles of stationary exercise bikes that include upright, semi-recumbent, and recumbent which are available on different prices. You can ride these bikes while listening to music, reading your favorite book or watching TV.

If you want to increase stamina and also strengthen the muscles in legs, arms and improve the overall functions of heart, the recumbent bike is what you need. This type of exercise bike is designed in ergonomic way, which increases the pedaling efficiency as well as comfort for extended riding. So you can sit in a chair-shaped seat and do pedaling on the pedals out in front. This is special good for those who suffering from lower back pain and joint pain to ride.

The cardio bike works on the cardiovascular system of the body. You can do both easy and hard training on it just with the flick of a wrist. Ride this type of exercise bike can strengthen the muscles of legs; improve the core stability and increase blood flow.

http://www.lavadeals.co.uk has quality exercise bikes, you can have a look.

What is the best upright exercise bike for a tall person?

smurph

I was wondering if there are any upright exercise bikes on the market suitable for tall people. I am 6'2'' and 200lbs.
I have tried out a Schwinn 140 in a nearby sports store but my knees just about hit the handlebars. The only bike in the store that was a good fit was a ProForm but I've read bad reviews about those.
I don't have an outdoor bike and don't want a recumbent exercise bike. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Answer
Did you adjust the saddle high enough, it also adjusts fore and aft. Chances are it was set up for a shorter person.

I have no time to go to gym so I want to purchase an exercise bike to help losing weight. I want to know how much time should I spend on riding it and how often should I ride?

Answer
exercise is about 10-20% of weight loss, the rest is said to be diet.
Diet and Exercise goes hand in hand for weight loss.
A lady I know does spinning classes and toned up a lot. That's an intense workout. I think she did it for 45 minutes a class 2-3 days a week.

I am looking to purchase an exercise bike, cannot decide which is better? Any suggestions?

chcadavid2

I was initially looking for an upright exercise bike, but then I noticed the indoor cycles (use for spinning). Now I am not sure what to get. I need something that's quite, use it for cardio training and develop leg strength. Any bike model suggestions will be more than welcome.

Thanks!!!

Answer
Check the local ebay, craig's list, paper, Salvation Army, or Goodwill for a used one. People buy exercise equipment all the time and only use it a few weeks. A real bike is a lot more fun and you will do it for hours instead of 15-20 min. When the weather is bad put it on a trainer.

I did....15 minutes a day and I'm going to work up to 30 of moderate aerobic excerise.

How is it going for you? If already exercised before becoming pregnant your input would be great but I am more interested in answers from woman just starting out and what they did in the beginning.

Answer
I actually stopped under doctor's orders because of first trimester spotting. Now I'm getting back into it and it's tough! Between taking it easy for 3 months and being tired from pregnancy, I felt pretty out of it for a bit.

I just take things slowly and easily (lots of walks because they're easy). I tried my exercise bike, but I find that my heart starts beating waaay too fast if I'm not careful, so I do that slowly now. Actually, I read a book while I do it, so that keeps me slow and relaxed.

Just listen to your body--don't push yourself too hard and don't get too tired or overheated. Drink lots of water, too!

I read on here the other day that walking regularly can help make labor go faster and easier--sounds like a good reason to walk to me!

Do these make good work-outs as an alternative option for lifting weights or jogging?

The_Irish_

As an exercise, I invented my own work-out routine. Several times a week, I go next to the wall, and take my arms and begin to exert my strength against the wall which tires out my body, I keep my strength exerted for a certain amount of time. Another thing instead of doing squats, I bend my legs in squat position and hold my body there until I get tired. Along with that during my day, I consume two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with two glasses of milk. At times, I go to the park and work on my pull-ups, I made it to at least eleven. I think I am doing pretty good not to mention I am going to the ninth grade so I figure I have to be strong.
Brian, you do realize peanut butter is filled with protein, correct? You may be telling the truth about running a mile under 5 minutes but I think you are only bluffing about the other stuff. Since it takes protein to build muscle, all the other body-builders would know that, the only person who doesn't seem to know is you. So in other words, if you were that strong, you'd seriously need to know peanut butter is a step. Another thing, I said nothing about losing weight, I am skinny so I am trying to build muscle and a bit of fat. (If needed.)

Answer
Anaerobics, weather you call it âlifting weightsâ, âweight liftingâ, âstrength trainingâ, âcalisthenicsâ, âusing small free weightsâ are all different ways to improve your muscle mass.

Calisthenics (using your own body as weight, doing pushups, squats, lunges, crunches or calves raises) are not an âalternative option" for jogging or any other aerobics activities (biking, swimming...) aimed to improve cardiovascular health. You will improve your aerobics if you strengthen your muscle with anaerobics.
You should do both aerobics and anaerobics, the latter to improve the former.

You did not invent wall push-upsâ¦you do those when you cannot handle floor pushups (if youâre an average woman/girl or a teenage boy).
You should still progress by a couple of reps each session if you eat the right high carbs meals 2 hours prior and a high protein diet, making sure you get enough rest days and enough sleep.
Each time you go back one inch from the wall, itâs another challenge and you go back down to 8 reps (use a ruler).
Then when the reps are time consuming, you go down in incline.
You can get down to 45 degree angle (desk/drawer pushups), even if youâre a teen lacking adult male hormones.

I donât get what you mean by âfor a certain amount of timeââ¦just go to muscle failure.

Donât hold your squats as youâre not engaging your quads, hamstrings and gluteus the right way. Maybe review your form if you get joints issues (knees, hips) as squats are VERY hard to perform with good form, especially if you follow YouTube videos made by nincompoops.
In fact, squats are the most unnatural body position ever when doing calisthenics, so you need counterbalance to not hurt your knees (never, ever, ever get you knee ahead of your toes, your lower leg should always be perpendicular to the floor).
You can hold on to someone or do door squats and hold on to a thin towel wrapped around each side of the door knobs (use a sturdy door) and still make sure that if you let go, youâll safely fall without bumping your head on anything (I advise beginners to put a baby mattress on the floor behind them and practice falling backward on it to make sure their head is secure).

The PB&J sandwich are greatâ¦legumes (peanuts, which are from the pea family, not true nuts but they contain healthy dietary fats) + grains (bread, make it whole-wheat) = complete protein + jelly (carbs) = a complete food sandwich with complete protein, carbs and dietary fats. Two glasses of milk (make sure itâs whole milk for kids and teens who are still growing and need the dietary fats) = 16 more grams of protein + calciumâ¦

If youâre 15yo, you can drink 4 glasses of whole milk or get some of you calcium some other ways like with other dairies (yogurts, cheeseâ¦) and from fish (sardines and salmon with bones), greens, peas, beans (kidney beans, black beans...), almonds and veggies (especially the cabbage family like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, radishes, turnip greens, collard greens). Just one serving of collard greens has 100mg of calcium (growing teenagers and pregnant women need the most calcium, like 1,300mg/day).

Good high protein food are dairies (milk, cheese, yogurts...Greek yogurts have 14 to 16 grams of protein), eggs (whites and no more than one yolk a day), meat, fish and poultry (do not eat the skin), legumes (beans, peas, lentils, including soy milk and tofu that comes from soybeans which are legumes), grains (rice, maize...called corn in the US, whole-wheat pasta and bread, rye, buckwheat, oats, millet...) and nuts/seeds (peanut butter included, even if peanuts are not nuts but are from the pea family, so theyâre legumes).
Combine legumes and grains and youâll get complete protein. Like eating a slice of bread with beans, or adding rice to lentils, or peas to pasta, or eating peanut butter with breadâ¦add jelly/jam and you get a PB&J sandwich.
Food with both calcium (for the bones) and protein (for the muscle) is the best like legumes and grains.

All the healthy teens I know are involved in sports, like playing soccer, basketball, running (track team), swimming (swimming team), playing Ultimate, learning martial arts, climbing rock and going up mountains, skiing in winter, going down rivers in kayaks, jumping on trampoline just for fun. They go to the gym to train for strength so they can improve in their sports.

Around the age or 15, they spend more time at the gym during the summer, using gym weight machines to gain 15 pounds of muscle mass (with a high protein diet) so they look big and ripped to face the beginning of the new school year with confidence. Then they lose it during the school year as they have to study to get good grades (and not spend too much time at the gym) but theyâll regain the muscle mass next summer for the next school year.

Get involved in sports. There are lots of opportunities when youâre a teen (before you become an adult with a job, responsibilities and kids).

im not that big, but i would like to lose a couple of pounds. what should i do?

Answer
Remove all forms of sugar from your diet, obviously. Fruit is high in naturally occurring sugar. Don't eat fruit. Stay away from juice. It is not healthy, no matter what the commercials say. Eat an orange or an apple if you really want the fruit because fruit juice is much worse. Have you ever tried to squeeze your own juice? Instead of just getting the sugar from 1 orange or apple or whatever, in a glass of juice, you're probably getting the sugar from, say 15 oranges. I dare you to try to eat that many in one sitting or even in a whole day. It is the fiber of the orange/apple, whatever fruit you like juiced, not the juice, that is "good" for you. Juice and fruits should be avoided. Once you've gotten down to your ideal weight, then eat the fruit but exercise. Plain yogurt and lots of vegetables, salads etc. Don't use ANY dressing. I don't understand why people need dressing on their salads, just put lots of vegetables on it and learn to love it. Dressing in any form, vinegar, oil, whatever is unnecessary other than for taste preference. Adjust your preference because there's no point in eating a salad if you eat dressing. You might as well have not eaten the salad because it undoes any good the lettuce would have done. Eat nuts for protein. Cut out bread, anything w/carbs, (crackers, rice, potatoes, etc) and meat. If you need the bread eat rye or whole grain wheat NO WHITE BREAD. If you really love meat eat fish instead.

The best way is to cut back on what your eating, don't eat out anywhere, and don't eat stuff like chips and cookies and candy. It comes off slower than any of these fad diets, but as long as you don't go back to old eating habits it will work. Like, eat one bowl of cereal for breakfast. Eat a sandwich and some veggies and dip or something like that for lunch. If you need a snack, either eat fruit or if you need to eat something like chips than get low fat ones or quakes (mini flavored rice cakes), they're really good. And then for dinner eat something sensible like a meat, a carb, and a veggie. Then if you need a snack at night again eat something sensible.

The other poster gave you some good sound advice. There are no "quick fixes" to losing weight and keeping it off. It's within ourselves to keep our body's in shape.

Exercising is very important. Try "fast walking" hiking, biking, etc., if you don't want to go to a gym. If you can afford a gym then talk to the trainer there. Don't kid your inner self either. If you truly don't feel you can stick to going to the gym 3 times a week or more, please don't as you will disappoint yourself. Swimming is another good exercise. Try to hook up with some friend and go bike riding (very popular in British Columbia) and keeps you toned up.

Drink 8 - 10 glasses of water as water flushes the kidneys out, keeps all organs (your skin is also an organ) clean and flushes out the impurities of your body including fat.

There may or may not be an easy way to lose weight permanantly and effectively. What may be easy for you may not be easy for another. Here is the way I see it. Your mind and body work together on every aspect. Everything you do is about behavior, therefore, if you have decided that you want to change your weight then you have to change your behavior, your eating behavior. Are you eating your meals too quickly? Are you eating your meals at the correct time? These questions are important to make those changes. Am I eating the right foods to aid in my weight loss? Am I tempted just because a snack is in front of me or can I walk away and say, "no, I am on a program and I intend to follow thru with that plan because I am responsible and I love my body enough to say no." It doesn't mean that you can never enjoy snacks again, just in small quantities and not so often. Not everything has to be about food. It's a condition that you can change. You have become conditioned to overeat. Start there, with your behavior and maybe you might answer other issues of your life along with food.

Always have breakfast. Have a snack between meals such as fruit, or low fat yogurt. Have a good lunch with fruit & vegetables. Have a light dinner then have a snack later on. Try to exercise at least four times a week. Keep your mind relaxed. Have a massage at least once a week. Drink drink drink at least eight glasses of water every day. Try and get fresh air every day.

How to get tone legs and big butt?

Alison

How can I get toned legs not big and bulky though, and a bigger butt?

Answer
A good diet/exercise plan would be:

Breakfast: Cook 9-grain cereal (from health food store) in water with rolled oats and wheat bran. Make a big pot of it on weekends and scoop out a cup each morning. Add low fat milk, nuts and berries. Drink hot Ovaltine. Breakfast should be your largest meal of the day to raise blood sugar level which falls during the night.

Lunch: Egg, tuna or turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with bean or alfalfa sprouts and yogurt w/fruit. If you had meat loaf for dinner, bring a meat loaf sandwich on whole grain bread (NO mayo). On cold days, a squatty thermos of hot chili, split peas with ham, or beef stew.

Snacks: Fresh (not canned) fruit: banana, orange, apple, kiwi, grapes, peach, nectarine, cherries, pineapple. No chips and nothing ever from a vending machine.

Dinner: salad with white meat chicken and fresh (not canned) veggies: tomatoes, 2 kinds of lettuce, 2 kinds of shredded cabbage, shredded or sliced carrots, alfalfa or bean sprouts, zucchini, hard boiled eggs, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, tofu, cottage cheese...Instead of dressing, squeeze 1/4 tomato over it.

Or homemade bean/vegetable soups; great way to recycle leftovers.
Or grilled fish with steamed veggies.

Or omelet: In blender, whip together eggs, tofu, cottage cheese, onions, garlic powder. Cook with mushrooms, chopped tomatoes and green or red peppers.

Foods to avoid: junk food, pastries, desserts, sugar, salty foods, syrup (even canned fruit in syrup), peanut butter, fatty/greasy foods (pork, wieners, chops, bacon, salami, pizza), pasta, potatoes, white bread, rice, canned veggies, ice cream, fast food, soda, chips. And of course no tobacco or alcohol in any form. Both of those add wrinkles and destroy your brain. No oil except olive and mac nut. Coffee also rots your brain.

To keep your skin clear, drink water. Veg. juice is good too. But not canned juice (too much sugar.)

Join a gym; they have all the equipment and staff to show you how to use it to get the look you want to achieve. Much cheaper than buying your own equipment. Go hiking, biking, jogging, bowling, swimming...play tennis, badminton, volleyball, soccer..

If you lack energy to exercise, take Super B complex.
To lose weight, try an appetite suppressant.

Answer
Hi
Your pants are a bit tight, you canât seem to stop eating junk, and youâre tired all of the time. Itâs time to get healthy and lose weight. Combined with a more sensible diet, an exercise bike can help you achieve the results you want.

Ugh, the Diet.

So many people go wrong here. Forget fad diets, forget starvation. Slow and steady wins the race. Try changing one thing about your diet. Limit yourself to one soda a day. Stop skipping meals. If you always clean your plate, start leaving one or two bites. A total change in diet is work. If you go for a radical change, you are setting yourself up for failure. Youâll be surprised how well small changes work.

The Right Bike Determines Your Success

This is a critically important part. There are literally hundreds of exercise bikes available. You have to be honest with yourself to discover the one that will work best for you. If you talk yourself into some fantasy world where your exercise plan is going to work this time even though thereâs nothing different, youâre going to be disappointed. If you think ahead, you will buy the right bike for your needs. You will end up with a successful long-term exercise routine.

Think back to your last exercise routine attempt. Why did you stop? Did you suffer an injury? Did you get bored? Was it just too hard to do every day? Was it hard to find the time? Answer these questions truthfully. If you donât figure out where you went wrong, you wonât be able to come up with a solution.

Avoiding and Working Through Injuries

If an injury caused you to stop working out, how did you sustain your injury? Becoming physically fit is supposed to help you prevent injuries, not cause them. There is an exercise bike for someone who has been injured working out. Itâs called a recumbent exercise bike. Itâs the kind found in a lot of health clubs. It has a large, bucket seat, and you sit back and low to the ground. It is perfect for people beginning a new exercise routine. Itâs also very good for back problems as it forces you to keep good posture. It puts no pressure on your joints, and you can keep working out even if you have minor injuries.

Overcoming Boredom

Did you get bored the last time you tried to workout on a regular basis? If you did, you are likely to get bored again. With exercise bikes, the solution is usually a bike with several different levels and riding programs. You can get bikes with different difficulty levels.

How long should I excercise on a recumbent bike?

Nick A

I'm a 22 year-old smoker, I weigh 220 down from 230 about 2 months ago. I used to run on a treadmill for one mile a day. I have since stopped because it is way too difficult being a smoker. (please spare me the responses on quitting)

My weight loss goal is 20 lbs. I believe this is within reach but I would like someone with experience to tell me how long I should pedal per day to get the fastest results. Thanks!

Answer
HI
You should ask your gym instructor to give you a program that suits you with controlled heart monitoring, The usual training for CV machines is: Tread mill for approximate 8min.for your worm up.
Move on to a choice of bikes, you have chosen recumbent bike which is good for 20min. and then you what to cool down by perhaps using the tread mill in walking pace for approximate 5min.If you find this is hard going start with a lesser time on the machines and increase your pace gradually.
But you should all ways remember that exercise on its own will not make you loose wait, you must ad a correct diet designed for you by your gym instructor or your dietitian to run along side with your exercise, i hope this is of Any good to you.
