Exercise bike is it the same thing as using a treadmill?

Im getting an exercise bike, and I was wondering if it will give the same results as a treadmill? I plan on using the weight loss level for the bike and make it so its like a hill climb type. If I do this for 30 minutes everyday what will my results be?

Answer
Well if you put it on strong resistance (like going up a hill) you'll do a lot of cardio exercise but also tone your legs a lot - in fact if it's a lot of strain, you'll likely bulk up your legs a bit. Not sure if it's quite like a treadmill - for a start, different muscles are used in the legs. I used to do about 30mins bike per day plus 200 sit-ups and 100 push-ups and I toned up quite a lot over a couple of months. I also ran up and down my stairs, about 50 reps (like climbing 500 feet). That's just basic level stuff. I never got that fit nor that toned but it was certainly worth it versus no exercise and if I ate averagely (I eat a lot) I would have lost plenty of weight for sure.

I recently bought an exercise bike and apparently it can give me cancer?

Q. It says "This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm."

I know this is a warning issued in a lot of California products. But this is an exercise bike and I'll be exposed to it a long time. So, I'm a little worried. On the other hand, I'm sure the gym bikes have the same type of warning. People I see at the gym every day don't have cancer....What should I do? I think I'll just install it.

Answer
California is a cancer.

Tegan M

Female, 5'2, wanted for off road and road use (around the Blue Mountains in Sydney). What type of bike should I buy and what is available for around $300??

Answer
For the previous poster the bikes that you listed cost a lot more in Australia, the cheapest Specialized Hardrock is $600 and the Trek 820 is $500.

$300 won't get you much brand new, so don't expect too much, good quality second hand bikes can be found for that price but can take a while to to find the right one. Buy a hardtail mountain bike, they can have either suspension or rigid forks. Don't buy a full suspension bike as any bike that's less than a $1000 probably isn't worth buying.
For any off road riding the 'mens' style bike frame would be stronger than the 'womens' style step through bike frame. Don't buy an el cheapo bike from Kmart/Target/BigW as they aren't the best of quality.
Here's one for $299 that looks like it would be suitable for you, it's available in a 15" frame which would probably be about the right size for you :

What is a suitable diet and exercise program for a 14 year old girl who isnt allowed diet pills?

Q. My mum and I went on a giant shopping spree yesterday for my birthday (In April) I dont get the clothes until April but I want to lose a few extra kilos so I feel confident in the clothes. In Australia we are going through a heatwave so it has to be exercise that can be done inside. I have a few aerobics DVDs and an exercise bike, but I just need a program and some tips on how to make it so that I can lose extra, maybe I should just throw up my food?

Answer
i don't think throwing up your food is a very good idea. I do recommend however using those Cd's and a trick of my dad's. He takes a deck of cards (one pack for each exercise, or one for all) and picks an exercise for it, like crunches, push ups, some stretches (which you should do before any exercise) and any other one you can think of. He takes one card everyday and does that number of exercises. Meaning if I grabbed a 5, I would do 5 um... curl ups for the day. Then another card, 8, and do 8 different stretches! For faster results try taking 10 cards per. day, it works for me. and always, once again don't forget to stretch before any exercises.OK? Now that's just exercise, it's about food now. my main target is towards fruit for beginners. I love eating apples (if I can get my hands on them!). It really helps to watch what you eat so next time your about to stuff a twinky in your mouth, think. I really hope this will help. Good Luck! (:

How can I lose weight in the lower part of my body only?

When I lose weight, my face becomes really skinny and my cheekbones come out, but my lower part and belly look ok. I don't want a skinny face, just legs and belly. What to do?

Answer
Targeted exercises for your lower body, especially crunches/sit-ups/recumbent exercise bike, etc. I'm not an exercise expert, but if you go a gym, they'll be able to advise you on the best things to do to get a targeted workout. Unfortunately there's no one food to eat/not eat that will target only one area of your body. Typically, hips/thighs/stomach etc. are the last thing to go in weight loss.

Are there any cardio excercises you can do with bad feet?

hellzfirex

I have a recent foot injury that will probably never go away the doctor said that constantly hurts when I walk, and bike for long periods and running will make it worse within 5 minutes. I really can't swim often or that well, so are there any other ways to get a good cardio workout?
I'll look into that recumbent bike and pilates. I do weight training I just need alternatives to cardio because I cannot run or bike (on a regular bike) anymore without my feet getting injured more.

Answer
you might try a recumbent bicycle - that's the kind of bicycle where you sit down like you are in a chair and your legs out in front of you. It eliminates the soreness of bicycle riding, is easier on the back, and puts little strain on the feet.

the other alternative is a hand pedaled bicycle. It is largely an arm builder but will get your heart rate up.

You may also consider weight training and exercise machines - they don't get your heart rate up for long periods of time, but they are an important part of fitness, especially when you are limited in what you can do.

Ask a physical therapist for some advise..

good luck and keep exercising.

How to work out on your period?

Nellie

When I have my period, the cramps make me not want to work out my core and the fact that there's a pad between my thighs makes me not want to move my lower body at all. I've been working out my upper body when I have my period but there's only so many dumbbell exercises you can do and it gets boring. I heard that during your period, hormonal changes can boost your tolerance and muscle recovery, so I want to take advantage of those changes to make the most of my workouts and work out my entire body. Any tips?

Answer
Your menstrual cycle may be a drag on your mood, but it doesn't have to slow down your workout schedule. For some athletes bleeding is such a burden that they take birth control pills like Seasonique to limit their periods so they don't have to mix training sessions with PMS. But do you really have to change up your menstrual cycle in the name of a good workout? And can exercising when you're bleeding pose more serious risks than simple inconvenience? We scoured the medical journals and talked to top researchers to get the scientific low-down on how your menstrual cycle does (and doesn't) affect your workout.

Top athletes don't let a little bleeding slow them down, and you don't have to either. Turkish researchers surveyed 241 elite athletes about how their menstrual cycle affected their performance. While nearly three out of four women said they felt worse just before menstruation, 63 percent said that their pain decreased during training and competition and 62.2 percent said that they believed their performance was just as good when they had their period as other times of the month. A West Virginia University study found that female runners performed equally well whether tested during the first half or second half of their menstrual cycles. The one caveat may be for women with severe premenstrual and menstrual symptoms, such as serious cramps and heavy bleeding. In one French study women who reported these symptoms performed more poorly on a broad-jump exercise during their period compared to their later in their cycle.

Your Menstrual Cycle: Your period might increase your chance of injury.
Women are two to 10 times more likely to get ACL injuries than men, and studies have found clusters of these knee injuries at the startâand just beforeâmenstruation. Why? When Australian researchers looked at the muscle mechanics of women running on a treadmill, they found differences in the way their knees moved during menstruation compared to ovulation. The researchers chalked this up to poorer motor control during menstruationâanything from letting your knee collapse inward when you land to letting your quads do all the work instead of involving the hamstrings and glutes, says Timothy E. Hewett, Ph.D., director of the Sports Medicine Biodynamics Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research Foundation. "The bad news is that there may be an association between a woman's menstrual cycle and her risk of ACL injury," says Hewett, who has been studying the effect of the menstrual cycle on injury for 15 years. "The good news is while we can't change a woman's anatomy or do a lot about her hormones, we do know that we can alter her neuromuscular control and decrease her injury risk by half." In several studies, Hewett and his colleagues showed that when they gave athletes additional neuromuscular training, teaching them how to reduce the load on their knees and ankles and building up strength and coordination in both sides of the body, they dropped their rates of ACL injury, ankle injury and knee cap pain by 50 to 60 percent. He recommends adding single-leg balance work, plyometric jump work (focusing on form rather than quantity), and hamstring and glute strengthening to your workouts twice a week for 15 to 20 minutes.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends regular aerobic exercise to help relieve PMS. You probably don't need a scientist to convince you of that! Set foot in the gym when you're PMSing and you'll boost your mood, ward off fatigue and facilitate a better night of zzz's. "I feel best any day of the month if I get going in the morning with a workout," says Anne Kveta Haack, 36, of New York City, who rotates between swimming, running, biking, yoga and light weights regardless of her cycle status.

Most of you are game to hit the gym no matter what time of the month it is. One 2010 study found that women's workout schedules did not change over the course of their menstrual cycle, whether they took birth control pills or not.

Hope this helped!!!!

Q. I am a 18 year old boy. I am fat from when i was 10 years old. I have developed little man boobs also because i am fat,i really need help. I am having a very miserable life due to my body.

Please advice diet and exercises
...Please provide a diet chart if you can...

Answer
I am not a doctor, but I was very overweight when I was your age. The best advice I can give you is to read one of Dr. Atkins' books particularly New Diet Revolution (2002). I have followed his diet and lost tons of weight and kept it off. The main idea is to cut carbs to around 20 net grams of carbohydrates which should all come from vegetables. Here is a quick summary:

Meats: You can eat basically any unprocessed meat in any quantity. You have to limit your intake of things like bacon and deli meat and you can have eggs though each egg has approximately 0.4 grams of carbs.

Dairy: You can only have butter, 4 ounces of hard cheese, and a limited amount of heavy cream (I use the cream to whip eggs for scrambling.) No milk, no yogurt, no soft cheeses like cottage cheese.

Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds are relatively low in carbohydrates and high in fiber and fat. You can probably get away with using them as garnishes in salad or a tiny palmful as a snack. Remember that fat is not bad for you, but carbs are and nuts usually have about 3 net carbs per ounce. Do not eat peanuts or soybeans, do not eat peanut butter, almond butter is ok.

Veggies: Nearly all your carbs should come from veggies, particularly salad veggies like lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, and limited amount of carrots. Other veggies that are acceptably low in carbs are things like broccoli, cauliflower, zuccini, yellow squash, and asparagus. I like to steam them and eat them with just salt and pepepr or a sprinkling of shredded cheese like pepper jack.

Fruits: Most fruits are full of carbs and relatively little nutrition other than some fiber and vitamins. The only fruits you should eat are avocado (limit one per day) and berries like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries (also limit to about a handful per day.) Plums are ok but only one per day if you've not eaten your handful of berries. All other fruit should be avoided especially bananas.

Fats: Oils (like olive oil), mayo and natural fat in meat are not bad and you don't have to avoid it at all, in fact fat helps to supress your appetite and helps to make you feel full, not to mention makes everything taste better. I eat mayo like it's on sale and I am very thin and in fact am losing weight. Fat also plays a major role in the absorbtion of vitamins and nutrients, cell and brain health, and helps you to lower your blood lipids. So go ahead and fry your eggs in full fat butter (no margarine or other hydrogenated fats/oils.)

Water: You have to drink at least eight glasses of water. It is hard and I have trouble with this, but it's important to help rid your body of all the byproducts and waste matter from breaking down fat. Losing weight puts a lot of strain on your kidneys and you have to take care of them.

Sweets: All sugar is off limits and fake sugar has to be limited as well. I usually allow myself only two "servings" of fake sugar. The first I use in my coffee (decaff, no caffeine is allowed in the diet, which includes sodas and tea) and the second I have sugar free jello after dinner. Although there are no carbs in fake sugar, it may trigger sugar cravings and could stimulate insulin levels which is bad for weight loss so it's best to avoid. Now that I'm more used to the diet, I only have a half a packet of splenda in my coffee and have taken to having a square of Lindt 85% cocoa chocolate for a "sweet" snack which only has one carb per square. Or you could save your handful of berries or your plum for dessert. Many condiments have hidden sugars which include katsup and bbq sauce so they are banned from your diet.

Exercize: You have to exercize every day. It doesn't have to be much but it must be high resistance. My preferred way of exercizing is to get on a recumbent bike, crank up the resisitance and read a book for 35 to 40 minutes. You could get on an eliptical and do the "gluteal" routine at a high resistance, or you could get on the treadmil and put the incline as high as it goes for a brisk uphill walk. If you prefer to lift weights or use circuit training machines, great, the more weight the better.

Here's a sample grocery list:
Eggs
Cream
Chicken quarters - bake covered for one hour at 375F
Chicken breast - bake covered for 35 minutes at 350F
Ground beef
Frozen tilapia filets
Canned tuna
Cheddar and pepper jack cheese
Almonds and pecans
Almond butter
Mayo
Mustard
Ranch or Caesar dressing
Iceberg lettuce
Fresh spinach
Preprepared salad greens
Tomatoes
Avocados
Carrots
Plums
Fresh berries
Frozen strawberries
Frozen broccoli and/or the Normandy veggie mix

Should I get a stationary recumbent bike?

Madison

I need to get 45 mins of cardio in each day for my health. I'm thinking of getting a stationary recumbent bike for inside. My only concern is I know a lot of times when people buy exercise equipment it never gets used and just sits there then gets thrown in the dump or at a garage sale. Should I get one?
If you have any other exercise ideas, please feel free to let me know. Keep in mind that I live in Texas and it is sweltering hot here (with the humidity it feels like 102 right now), and if I'm in the heat like that I tend to get heat stroke, so that's why I was thinking something indoors. I can't join a gym because of finances. I've got to do something cardio though because I have over 100 lbs to lose.

Answer
well just ask yourself if your going to be one of those people. if you can be determined to do it than i think it is a wonderful idea. if you cant get 45 minute in on it a day try to do some other activities like walking. it is also great for your health. good luck

I've finally convinced my mum to get an exercise bike but we have no idea where to start. Our budget is about £100 but we could probably go up to £150. Do you know any good makes/brands that we can buy? Its got to be pretty easy to use and set up, nothing to "techy" basically. if you've got a link to add that would be brilliant :) thank you! xox

Answer
Get her a used one. You may of convinced her to start exercising but I doubt that she will stick to it. A real bike would be a lot more fun and you can go on rides with her. Exercise bikes are very boring and hard to stay with for very long. A bike ride with friends on bike paths is a lot more fun.

What is the best machine to buy to work out?

I don't have much money, but I was wondering, what would be best? A treadmill, an elliptical, or an exercise bike? It's awfully hard to get motivated to go out and walk in the winter!!! Just wondering which would be the best for a full-body workout, at the best price. Thanks :)
Should probably add - don't want to just stay in shape, I want to lose weight.

Answer
It really depends what you like the best, because even if someone here suggests a good piece of equipment, and it turns out you hate it and will never use it, then it doesn't matter too much!
My mom found luck with a stationary bike, and she could still watch tv and ride without having to go too crazy with the resistance and all that. IT depends what you like. I personally hate running and ellipticals, so I am biased.

Often the YMCA in your neighbourhood can provide lower rate gym memberships, especially if you are cash-strapped. You should try a "free pass" day at a gym, and try out all the equipment to see what you like most.

FInally, buy it used!! Don't buy brand new. You can always get used equipment someone else has tired of, either through a pawn shop, the newspaper, or online.

Good luck!

i dont have the transportation to go to the gym regularly and i was wondering if there is something i can do here in my home that is equivalent to the work that i do at the gym, i want to lose weight so my target is about 1-2 hours on the treadmill everytime i go to the gym. but the problem is i cant go to the gym more often than i would like to due to lack of transportation. so is there any workout i can do here at my house that will equal to that workout i do at the gym? Btw my friend told me the doing jump ropes is effective but my kneecap got dislocated thrice and i fear that that might happen again so jump rope is out. Do you guys have any good home-workouts? please help and if you could site some sources that would much be appreciated... thank you in advance... God bless!

Answer
Hey, don't worry about not able to go to gym!

No gym?

No probs there!

Exercise can be done at home - easy, cheap, convenient and flexible, all roll into one!

Try running, jogging or walking outdoor, 3 -4 times per week, for 30-40 mins per session.

Swimming is another good exercise to do.

Got a bike? Cycle outdoor!

It's the most powerful form of exercise because you burn about 600-800 calories per hr, if you cycle vigorously. Plus, cycling is really a joy and your exercise time passes by quickly.........

What's more, cycling is not harsh on your legs so your knee caps are safe.

What exercises can i do to slim down the fat in my inner thighs?

lilkat-ja6

I have fairly large thighs that are very muscular, but that have pockets of fat on the upper inner part of my thighs. Even when I am at an ideal weight, this area of my thighs remains fatty and makes me self conscious when wearing shorts. What can i do to slim/tone that area? And yet (I've tried squats and leg presses) ...please be specific.

Answer
It is important to work all four of the main muscle groups in your thigh. These are leg abductors, biceps femoris, leg adductorâs and quadriceps. All of these must be worked to see a noticeable change. Swimming and walking are all great inner thigh exercises. A brisk walk daily can do wonders. Swimming is great for toning the thigh and abdominal areas as well as the rest of your body.
Exercise bikes, treadmills and cross trainers can provide a great work out. Keeping the resistance level low is important. To much can end up making the muscles in your legs grow bigger. Weights can also be used to target the inner thigh but the key is light weights and high repetitions to sculpt and tone the leg.

3 Fab Inner Thigh Exercises:

1) Stepping one foot onto the step and then taking the other foot to meet it on the same step and then back down again. This can be done one the bottom of some stairs or with a step box.

2) Hold on to a chair with your feet together, tense your abdominal muscles and your back straight. Slowly put one leg in front a tighten your inner thigh as you do it. Try not to swing your leg but use a slow controlled motion. Light ankle weights can be added over time.

3) Lie on the floor on your right side and align your head, shoulders and hips. Use your hand to prop your head and put the other hand in front for support. Bend your left leg and put it in front of you. Keeping your leg straight raise the leg off the floor. Hold the leg still when you get to the top and the slowly lower it back to the floor. Make sure you do an even number of these on each side

Answer
First thing we could do would be to talk about it, spread awareness, let people know that there is an issue which needs to be tackled before it turns into a crisis. You posing this question depicts that we (at least you) have got the first step right.

Let me first state that in my opinion, there is no out-of-the-box easy solution for this. The only answers are search for newer and non-traditional sources of energy like geothermal energy, tidal energy, solar energy, liquid hydrogen, garbage energy etc and exercise controlled and minimized use of non-replenishable sources of energy.

Here are a few suggestions-

1- Save oil!
Seen as a caption in many of the children's painting competitions- "Save Oil!" should be the motto of everyone around the planet. Personal automobiles should be used less. Public transport facilities should be ameliorated.

2- Go CFL!
Compact fluorescent light bulbs should replace the energy consuming electric bulbs. Likewise, age-old machines should make way for the modern energy efficient appliances.

3- Check vehicles!
What was the last time you neglected your bike/ car's poor average and mileage? Over-consumption should be kept under check by keeping your ride in good condition.

4- Search!
Search for new oil reserves might just buy us more time to think over and solve the impending crisis.

5- Fire and oil make a deadly combo...
Keep the oil refineries and reserves well protected from fire. Not only these accidental fires cause a loss of money and lives, they result in huge loss of the natural resources.

6- Encourage the solar cooker.
Don't mock the nuclear plant. It is a shy but bright kid. Kidding! Ok bad joke... I mean to say- we should slowly work towards establishing non-traditional sources of energy in our lifestyles. Nuclear energy still has a wide scope of application. Same with hydroelectric, solar, wind and other alternatives.

7- Turn off the lights, switch off the fans....
You're probably yawning reading this. This had been repeated so many times but still... you have to save energy in day-to-day affairs.

8- Spread awareness.
Yes, we need more campaigns. The chapters in our social-studies books have already told and retold us all these things but, there is a certain crowd that needs to be told about this in a more effective manner.

9- Smokeless and fuel efficient chulhas.
Here, in India, villages still rely on fuel wood and coal for their basic energy needs. The smokeless chulhas (stoves) go a long way in conserving wood from blind consumption.

10- Use Biogas.
We need more biogas plants. They, in my view, are the best and simplest alternatives in terms of energy cycling. Go biogas! So what if it doesn't smell like roses?

11- Population!
All these measures are of no or little use if the consumption still keeps growing. How about we put a check on population growth? We have been listening to this since the beginning! Do something! Take lessons from China!

12- Plant trees....
Again a well-known and over-discussed solution. We need more mass campaigns. More fuel wood trees and shrubs should be grown.

What do you think is going to happen to humans in the future?

purple.

Consider all aspects... Climate (global warming), population increase, crashing economy, increased illnesses (such as Cancer), pollution, war, and crime rate.

I just want to know others opinions.

How can we change? What scares you most? When do you think the worst will start to happen?

Answer
Climate Change(global warming):
First of all, there is no solid evidence if global warming is human induced, so we might not be able to anything about it. Like how our economy works in cycles, the Earth's climate apparently also follows a cycle, just like how we had our last Ice age, there were many before it, each with different lengths in time. Of course, there is no doubt we're doing things to mother Earth that could speed up the process, but to what degree is still a big and unsolved question. Fighting climate change is a global effort- a small hole on the bottom of a water bottle will discharge all of its content, we cannot have some nations doing it and others destroying it.What scares me the most is that I probably won't live to see Ice Age, just kidding. I am not really scared of global warming myself, I am scared for our future generations that will be dealing with it. I'm not an expert in climatology(Is that even a word?) It isn't completely hopeless, now that humans can control the climate through advance technology.

Population Increase:
If you're in a developed nation, I don't think there is need for change, as there is a trend in having less kids, and educated people generally know not to have too many kids, because they understand the burden behind it. We are already seeing some countries across Europe with declining population. I don't think we need a one-child policy all over the world, not because it's kinda anti-democracy, but because education is a power tool. If you're in a third world nation, without adequate sanitary condition and health care, then yes, what we can do is providing better education overall. I enjoy hiking and biking, and those two things, to me, are more enjoyable in areas where there are less people, not commercialized, and in a natural environment. A huge population could bring more pollution, and less all natural environment. I'm scared one day the favorite mountain I loved to climb is developed into a community with many houses on top of it. It's already bad enough in places like China and India, and also in parts of Latin America countries, I cannot imagine any worse than that. But I think human's roach-like survivability will somehow deal with the issue, like how Japan dealt with theirs.

Crashing Economy:
Unfortunately, there is no simple solution in solving a crashing economy, and what we can do to change it also depends on many factors. My suggestion is, live frugal, plan for retirement, get into saving habits, and don't be wasteful. Anyone would be scared to get laid off, especially when you have a loan to pay. For me, I'm scared I can't get a job when I get out of grad school. Due to my lack of knowledge on the economy, I have no proof that my gut feeling this wave of economic crisis is far from over, although some experts are already standing out to say there will be a second wav

What will an exercise bike do for my body?

Will it build muscles? And in which areas?
Will it burn fat? And in which areas?
Is it effective?

Answer
Exercising for 45-90 minutes a day on your exercise bike, while counting calories and avoiding nutrient-poor foods will do the following:

1) Give you more energy. Daily exercise increases your metabolism, gives you more energy and makes you feel less tired throughout the day.

2) Cycling will build muscles in your legs, though it's not a complete leg workout because the motion is not weight bearing and it only works some of the muscles. You will not end up with gigantic thighs and shins no matter how much biking you do.

3) Your cardiovascular capacity (lungs, heart) will improve. This will translate directly into being able to run or engage in other sports better.

4) Your sex drive may be effected. Some men find that exercise, while not effecting their performance in the bedroom negatively, reduces their overall sex drive in a positive way.

5) It will burn fat, especially if you count calories at the same time. In order to lose fat you must burn more calories than you consume. Fat loss occurs over the entire body - there is no such things as targeted fat loss, that is a myth that has been disproved.

In my opinion, cycling is the most accessible and effective way to lose weight. You burn can burn more calories than running (per minute) and the risk of joint damage is greatly reduced. At 5 mph you may burn 9 calories per minute running versus 15 mph biking and burning 12 calories per minute (may vary depending on your weight, fitness level).

Riding out doors is better than riding a stationary bike. If you find yourself getting bored then get an audio player and listen to an audio book, podcast or some music.

Is a bichon frise a good dog?

Sarah M

I live in Canada and I plan on getting a dog for the first time. I heard that bichon frises are good dogs. They don't shed much either.

I have a few questions:

1. How many times does it need to be walked a day?
2. Is it ok if we don't walk it one day and leave it to romp around in the yard (sometimes I have a lot of school work and my parents work late)?
3. How often should we take it to a vet?
4. How often should it be groomed/washed?
5. Are they low energy dogs or high energy? If they are low energy does this mean that I won't be able to run with them (I would enjoy jogging/running with my dog)

I'm just curious about those questions I will do some more research online though.

Thank You!
6. Will they be ok in the Canadian Cold? It gets pretty cold up here during the winter, can we still leave them outside and let them run around in the yard?

Answer
i had a bichon for 17 years and he was a really super sweet dog ... friendly with people and animals ... he was so peaceful he could walk up to skunks and the skunks would give him a sniff and ignore him ...

1. i live in an apartment so he was walked several times a day but one walk a day would be good if you have a yard too ... they are not super athletic but they can keep up so do need to expend energy daily ..

2. that would be okay from time to time ... but do realize a backyard is not exercise/stimulation, they need to walk for that ...

3. as he was my first dog i brought him to the vet every year ... now that i have a new dog, i bring her when needed ...

4. they do need grooming ... i used to love to give mine a bath, and then brush and blowdry his hair, it would make him super puffy and snuggly, their fur is really nice but does take brushing and professional grooming ... i would bring mine for a professional groom at christmas and i would shear him off in the summer as it was so hot ...

5. i found energy wise, he would just keep up to what i was doing ... he like to run beside my bike, liked to hike but he was equally fine to snuggle next to you on the sofa ... you could run but you would have to wait until the dog was over a year to do that exercise as they have growth plates in their paws that are not formed fully until they are an adult ... my friend ran with her shih tzu when he was a young puppy and his paws are pointing out now due to it ...

6. my bichon lived in jasper, alberta, edmonton, alberta, ottawa, ontario, and vancouver, bc ... he never wore a jacket but he did not love the cold weather ... i let him get furrier in the winter ... if it is really cold the dog will just want to go out, do its business and come back in ... mine had a problem with the salt they put out for snow and ice ... i had to use a wax to protect his paws otherwise he would stop walking and keep lifting his paws ...

the are great dogs, smart, playful and minimal health problems ... in 17 years the only health problem my dog had was flea bite dermatitis when we moved to vancouver which resolved with appropriate flea prevention ... and the no shedding is so nice ... you don't realize how nice it is ... i grew up with a poodle, then i got my bichon when i moved out so i was not really used to shedding ... my dog now would be perfect if she did not shed :O)

I work out everyday, doing 30 mins aerobic exercise (bike, cross trainer, rowing machine) followed by 40 mins weightlifting. How soon can I expect to see some results?

Answer
Hi There,

I'm Sean Toh from Singapore. It all depends on the plan that you use and how your body respond to your plan. If your plan consist of a clean diet plan, you might see results faster. Some people respond faster if they are much younger and less stressful. When you are stressed, your body will release a chemical asking the body to store fat. Hence, when you are dieting and exercising, have a happy mental state and your body will respond better. Hope this tips will be useful for you. Mountain/Road/Hybrid?

Spencer Pa

I am looking to buy a bike, I ride in Singapore so the roads here have heavy traffic, lots of lights and turns.

I want a bike for exercising, leisure and commuting. which should i get?

Answer
Try to find a hybrid without a front suspension fork. If you are riding on the roads, a suspension fork is weight and complication that you don't need. The hybrid's bigger wheels and lighter frame make it a better choice than a mountain bike. While a road bike would work, they are more expensive and more fragile than the hybrids.

Ok, so i'm 14 (and a girl) and everyone keeps saying how skinny i am (not anorexic) But thats cuz they only see me in jumpers or shorts. My legs and arms and bum are all small but my stomach seems to have a little bit of flab that sticks out and i usally try to hide it. But with summer coming up (in australia) i wanna wear a bikini but i can't cuz i have that tummy flab that sicks out just a bit. I've been working out on the exercise bike for atlest 40 mins a day and have aten heaps of healthy food but the only weight lose i notice is in places i thought were already skinny! :(

If i continue on the bike will i soon see some of my tummy flub gone? I've tried crunches but soooo many people say they're pointless and that you can't spot target weight loss.

Help!?!

Answer
Actually, crunches aren't useless if you do them right. You just have to do them alot.

If nothing else, try buying some work-out videos. They usually contain good exercises to help you. Furthermore, you should also eventually lose some of your weight if you are consistently doing the bike and getting to your target heart rate.

Who wants to create a workout schedule for me?

I am 170cm tall and weigh 65kg. I would like to lose about 5 kilos, and tone my stomach and thighs. I have about 5 months to do this, so I know I have plenty of time.

Please create a workout which targets my stomach and thighs as well as giving me an all round slimmer physique.

Additional information:
- It is coming into Summer here in Australia, so I would prefer not to do much outdoor cardio
- I have access to a swimming pool
- I have a 3kg dumbbell
- I own an exercise bike

Thanks in advance!

Q. I bought 2 exercise bikes, one recumbent for in front of the TV for when I am watching my favorite shows. I have been doing about 40 mins a night. During the day when I am at my computer I have a mini under the desk bike. With the mini bike I am using it alot but really not exerting myself. I know that to lose weight you need to diet and exercise. Am I helping my weight loss at all with this?

Answer
All movement uses energy, that's to say it does burn calories. The thing is, if you want to burn fat you have to be in the fat burning zone of your exertion. This is normally not achievable at the same time as pouring over a spreadsheet but maybe when you are watching dancing with the stars. If you are reducing your calories and riding the bike as often and as intense as you can eek out, who is anyone to tell you it's not working? My experience leads me to say exercise that is only mild in exertion shows as only mild results. If you are going to spend the time working out. Give it your whole hearted effort. I mean it is your time and energy. Why not make it count.

I exercise sporadically (can do a few times a week for a few weeks then go days or weeks without & start the cycle again). I want to exercise almost daily (at least 5 times a week) to get my heart into shape but the excuses keep coming up.
Don't like 2 exercise in public by self (feel embarrassed) and don't know anyone 2 workout with like this, not much room in the house 2 do a lot (but I do exercise 2 fit tv at times), can't do at night when there's a free class at a local church (have other obligations can't get out of), don't have much money for gym membership (which would be the best thing for me I think, especially if it's competitive with encouragement). I live in a country-hick type city where I don't think it would be safe on the streets & there's not much going on exercise wise.
Motivated by 90s+ dance music (when I used to be really into exercise). I like dancing, gymnastics, etc. but there's no room for the kind I like. Are there free/cheap clubs out there? Suggestions?

Simply buy a home fitness equipment and work on it like 45 min a session every other day.

Please help motivate me to loose my last bit of weight?

best exercise bikes under 200 image

Cathrine

I am a 16 year old female. I have always been over weight because I have the 'fat gene'. Every female in my family is over weight. Given this I have always wanted to be thin, and I have lost 2 stone and 1 lb so far. I am now only about 1 and a half stone away from my goal weight but I just can't seem to stop eating any more. I am not eating unhealthily, I am just eating normal food. IE, Sandwich for lunch and 3 potatoes at dinner etc. I just miss food so much!

Because of this I have gained 1 and a half lbs over the last 2 weeks. I have prom in just under 4 weeks and I want to loose at least 5 pounds, 8 at most. I know this isn't gonna be easy. So I have been running, doing 100 sit up's and working out on my exercise bike every day. And during the day I eat fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch and meat and salad for dinner, and then snack on fruit.

But almost every day after dinner I keep eating things that are not fruit. For example, I just ate some sun-dried tomatoes, olives and pepers in oil... thats 200 kcals... this is ruining my diet and my long term happiness. I feel guilty the whole time I am eating, but I just can't stop my self.

Also I have a holiday in 50 days and I am going with my friends who are all slim and fit and healthy, some of them are models and I am below average looking and a stone over weight! So for the sake of fitting in, I need to loose at least 10 lbs.

My question is, please motivate me to stop eating, tell me how you have over come mindless eating and how you kept strong on your diet or what ever thing you have done that requires dedication and motivation. Thank you! xx

Answer
After dinner be sure to drink plenty of water.Take a picture that you had when you were heavier post it where you will see it everyday. Get a piece of paper.Make a list of why you want to lose weight. Remember why you wanted to lose weight in the first place.Remember how you felt before. Oh and eat slowly.

How much weight will I lose on an exercise bike?

I have been consistently 182 lbs and im 20 years old 6' 0'' male . If i ride an exercise bike while i watch tv for about 1.5 hours everyday, how long will it take me to lose 5-10 lbs? I will not be vigorously exercising, just trying to keep moving instead of sitting while i watch my favorite shows

Answer
i rode about 10hrs a week and would lose 1 to 2lbs a week depending on if i ate extra or not.
so if you do it every day and don't increase your calorie intake you might lose it all in one or two months.
i rode just a normal pace most of the time and every once in a while i would pedal really fast for about a minute a couple of times a ride. plan on your behind being really sore too.
also, i rode outside. it's best if you have a fan blowing on you if you ride indoors.

How is a regular exercise bike different than a spinning bike?

Kimmy

The buzz lately is that you can burn about 500 calories, tone up and lose weight quickly by exercising for only 30 minutes on a spinning bike.

I have a regular exercise bike and cannot afford a spinning bike or classes. Would I be able to achieve the same results by exercising for 30 minutes a day on my exercise bike?

Please explain to me the difference between the two bikes and how they work differently to give different results?

Answer
The primary difference is the adjustability and the quality that goes into the drive mechanism. Spinning bikes, as the name implies, spin a weighted flywheel using the power of your legs. The tension you set, in conjunction with the weight of the flywheel, determine the resistance you feel. This provides a much more realistic effect in terms of how it uses your muscles. A old school excercise bike isnt as good at effectively targeting the muscle used and doesnt provide as much of a realistic cycling feel.

That said, if your goal is just to get a workout in you arent going to miss much. A competitive cyclist would notice the difference but a casual rider just looking to burn some calories probably will notice only the terribly uncomfortable saddle of an old excercise bike.

Think of it as the diffference between running wind sprints vs. running parachute assisted acceleration sprints.... Unless you're a pro athlete working on dropping your 40yd times, wind sprints is just fine. Similar situation here. If you're gonna be heading to the races, start spining.. If you just want a workout save the money.

PS- If you get serious about riding and you really want the best set-up, IMO its using your road bike on resistance trainer like the cycleops fluid2 or something similar. It lets you keep your cockpit setup (duh, its your bike) but gives you the indoor training option for those shoddy days when you dont want to go outside and ride.

I'm getting this road bike pretty soon and I wanna know what equipment is essential? I wanna cycle fire the fun, not racing, just for exercise and fun. I'm extremely low on funds and need to know what equipment is essential and where can I get such equipment really cheap? I don't care on quality a whole lot.

Answer
Floor pump with gauge. You need to pump before every ride or at least 2-3 times a week. Plus a frame mounted pump for the road.

Tool kit and spare tubes. I use patches at home when I have 5-6 tubes to patch, seldom in the road. No need to make everybody wait for you.

Front and rear lights, even if you don't ride at night, lights will help you be seen on fog and rain and when you return later than expected.

Helmet. This is the only thing is ok to buy from Walmart because all the helmets are made to the same regulations. Cheaper ones usually are heavier.

Water bottles. You need to drink one bottle per hour.

Padded shorts. Even if you start with only one set that you wash after each ride they are necessary for rides of more than 10 miles.

Padded gloves. Avoid hand and wrist pain.

Cheap place to buy is your Local Bike Shop. LBS have discontinued items that go on sale all the time.

Once you can do 12-15 mile rides, you will want to buy clip-lessn clipless pedals and shoes.

If you ride outdoors in the winter, you will need several layers of thermal and water prof clothing and winter shoes.

Answer
I would try shopping used. I have found used (just as good) ellipticals, exercise bikes, and treadmills for under a $100. www.craigslist.org and the classified ads are the best places, as well as garage sales. The only new equipment (cardio-wise) for $40 brand new would be an exercise bike.
