upright bike vs. treadmill?
Paige
i am sixteen years old and i need to get into shape. i'm not trying to lose weight. but definitely trying to improve my cardio. i am a member at 24hour fitness and i prefer the upright stationary bike to the treadmill. if i do ALL of my cardio work on the bike, will i have near the same overall physical results as i would get on a treadmill?
Answer
You burn far more calories jogging on a treadmill than you do pedaling an upright bike. A gym bike is one of the LEAST efficient pieces of cardio equipment. But if you're walking slowly on the treadmill, sure, the bike is a better bet, as long as you have some resistance on it.
Here's the breakdown for a 140 lb body for 1 hour of exercise on various pieces of equipment:
Upright bike (12 mph) - 401 calories
Stairmaster (moderate pace) - 488 calories
Elliptical Trainer (moderate pace) - 501 calories
Treadmill (jogging 6 mph) - 668 calories
