My Schwinn 226 recumbent exercise bike is acting up- it's only giving a portion of the resistance it used to?

My bike is only giving about half or less of the resistance it used to for a given difficulty level. The computer then reports calories burned/ miles, etc., according to the level that is set instead of the actual work done.

There is no mechanical noise of any kind. Apparently the computer is telling the magnetic flywheel to engage less resistance than it should.

I've searched the net but have only come up with troubleshooting advice for no power or worn belts.

Any suggestions?

Answer
You need to keep in mind that magnetic resistance is based on the speed of the flywheel and not any type of physical contact. Here are some things to check:

1) Place a business card between the magnetic pickup and the flywheel. That, about 0.5mm or 1/64", is the distance that should separate the 2. If it is more than that, loosen the pickup and adjust it accordingly;

2) If the computer is battery operated, replace the batteries. It is possible that the display is battery operated and the computer is A/C. If the display stays on when you unplug it, replace the batteries;

3) If you have reduced your pedalling speed when this occurs, pedal faster;

4) Never rely on the calorie counter/heart rate monitor/any other physical device. It fails to take into consideration the most important thing- you. Calories and other things are different for everyone- those displays can be dangerously wrong. Since you don't move, the distance does nothing- can't be based on anything at all except a guess programmed in at the factory. Time is the better way to do that.

Any tricks to attaching the toe straps on the Schwinn 220 recumbent bike?

I put the exercise bike together, but find the stiff rubber toe straps impossible to attach. Thanks.
As a clarification, the term toe strap is what I saw it called in the item description. I would call it a foot strap. Thanks.

Answer
Its Impossible to attach toe straps on Schwinn so never try it.
