best exercise bike hip replacement image
Allison
I had a total hip replacement two years ago when I was 18. Im on the overweight side and was wondering if anyone could help me with what to do to lose weight, because a lot of exercises can hurt my artificial hip.
Answer
Walking, biking, and swimming are good. If you use gym equipment, the elliptical trainer is good for giving a low impact workout. Cross-country skiing is good. Stay away from high-impact activity such as jogging, rope-jumping, singles tennis, skiing moguls. Also bad is the stepper because it's like climbing stairs which puts great load on the hip. That doesn't mean you shouldn't use stairs; it means that you shouldn't use stairs purely for exercise purposes. If you still are unsure about what activities will accelerate the wear of your hip, contact your surgeon.
I've had both hips replaced (at 3 x your age!). It's been 10 years and I follow the above guidelineas re: exercise and activity. You are very young to have hip replacement which means it is even more important for you to do all you can to extend the life of your hip.
Pair your increased exercise with a sensible diet. Exercising alone probably won't net you much weight loss. In fact, you'll be turning fat into muscle and muscle weighs more than fat(!) Yes, really! However, you'll be healthier and more fit even if you don't lose a lot of weight.

Answer
Non weight bearing exercise: Swimming, biking, weightlifting, walking can be ok too.
Just not running, that will put a lot of pressure on the joints.
Good luck
